Honestly it didn't sound good for Nakladal in that interview. I might be reading too much between the lines though.

They could have just not qualified him or traded him to Columbus for Kerby Rychel. He was Seth Jones junior defence partner and I think has similar value to Harrington who was the eventual return.

I think it's more for depth purposes in case Wotherspoon proves that he can't play. The third pairing left side spot is his to lose. He also needs waivers.

Dylan Olsen would be an interesting depth signing. Big, LH shot, Calgary native, 25 years old. He'd be cheap & might take a 2-way contract.

I believe Cali wrote some pretty unflattering things about Olsens hockey IQ ...

Yup. I'd sooner take Justin Schultz than Olsen. Million dollar skills, 10 cent brain.

Kris Russell would be my first choice as well. He is a heart and soul guy who loved being in Calgary and he stepped up huge when Giordano went down. I think he would take a hometown discount too.

Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Hamilton
Jokipakka - Engelland

Elliot
Johnson

That's not an easy bunch to get through.

I wonder if Detroit would be interested in a Brendan Smith for Dennis Wideman trade.

LH shot for RH shot and both are Free Agents at the end of the season. Smith has been relegated to bottom pairing in Detroit due to the amount of LH shots and lack of RH shots that they have. Change of scenery likely does both players well.

I feel like Smith could be a good partner for Hamilton, leaving Jokipakka, Nakladal (re-signed), and Engelland to share the bottom pairing.

Engellend is also a right shot so even if Wideman is subtracted you have Brodie, Hamilton, Engellend and maybe Nakladal. If Wideman sticks around then no room for the Nak Daddy

Smith took a big step in the right direction this year. I watched a lot of Detroit games last season. He cut down the stupid penalties and played a very steady physical game. I would love him in a Flames jersey.

His coach played Eriksson over him most of the time which drove Det fans nuts. Smiths advanced stats are also pretty solid.

Thing is I'm not sure Det would want Wideman with Green there. They are pretty much the same type of player.

I have a feeling that Russell will be a Flames by the end of the week, at a significant discount, if we see anything happen with Wideman first of course. Until Wideman is gone, I cannot see much happening.

Wideman makes 2.5M more than Smith, but nothing to stop the Flames eating a little salary if that is what it takes. It would make it no longer a cost saving move, more of a change of scenery/get the fit for the roster kind of move

Which LHD are an option?

Kyle Quincy, Dennis Seidenberg and Kris Russell are the only 3 that stand out to me.

Flames don't really have the cap space to do anything until Monahan and Gaudreau are signed... and once we have them locked up we won't have the dollars to do anything except possibly resigning Nakladal (my preferred option) or a reclamation project on a low low salary. If the Flames could've traded Wideman I think they would've already traded Wideman so I figure we're stuck with him.

I wonder if we will eventually move Brodie back to Left side to play with Hamilton?
Or is Brodie just too good on the Right to consider that?

I think it's a terrible idea to move Wideman right now. His value is at an all-time low - low point production, injuries, as well as all the drama surrounding him with the Henderson incident. I think a lot of teams would be hesitant to take him on, and we might need to eat significant salary in order to get it done and would likely not get anything.

I think we would get the best value if we played most of the year with him and sold him off at the deadline. He's not the best D-man or the best skater, but he still has a decent shot and offensive instincts. He may do better next year in Gulutzan's systems too. I think everyone is a little too eager to jump on the guy even though he's just one year removed from a great offensive season.

What is it with Calgary fans always trying to sign guys we've traded or moved on from? Every year it's the same. We trade player X, player X becomes free agent, fans say-let's get player X back! It happens with almost every player. Iggy, Hudler, Russel, ect. I don't get it. In most cases the Flames have gotten all they can out of a player and the separation is mutual/makes sense.

Any decent 3/4 Dman is likely going to be plucked by Vegas in the expansion draft. Would be very cautious about bringing one over via trade or overpaying for a short term solution.

Is it bad that I want to sign Gormley just so the Jokinen trade can be looked at more favourably?
