I wouldn't call Bernie a left wing nut, I'd just say he doesn't understand much about economics and just hates corporations and the wealthy, same as he has for 40 years (just look at some of his speeches from the 70s). But at the same time many of the Leave supporters also don't understand much about economics either given how they voted for the poorest economic decision, and were easily duped by the Leave politicians lies about potential economic benefits. I think any time your message is generally appealing to emotion rather than logic it's easier to use the "crazy/nut" label, whether its left or right. I don't think they're crazy, just misguided.

UKIP leader Farage steps down as well, the two most prominent Brexiters have now stepped down from office. Nobody wants the hot potato.

Blair says that Britains should keep its options open, as Brexit details emerge and public opinion might shift - why not reexamine the conditions?

what a bunch of disgusting cowards. First they help divide the country with months of cheap propaganda, then they bail when it comes to facing the consequences of their vote and let somebody else clean up their mess. Disgusting.

Farage leaving does make sense though. He's not the party in power and would have no part anyways. It would be like if Quebec Separated in 95 and Bouchard stepped down from being the leader of the Bloc. In fact the Bloc would just disappear.

Boris not going for the PM is a farce. Totally outplayed.

The cynic in me wonders if these Brexit leaders happened to do something crazy like short the Pound before the vote?

I wonder if they made a killing off of the markets....

I doubt it.

Surely there were some people that made money off it but most of what we've seen from brexit leadership is buyers remorse.

Serious question. Going into the US election, would shorting the US dollar be a worthwhile bet?

I think you have to see what the market is expecting and then do the opposite if you want the big gains. For example with the Brexit, the money was loading onto the stay side before the vote. GBP was very strong. If the stay vote had won I think the pound would have just continued its upward trend but nothing spectacular like the plunge it ended up taking. Gold was very similar and probably the best pre vote buy. It would have been stable had the vote been to stay. But an exit vote would have gotten you some big gains because of the surprise factor. That's the key.

So with the us election, I would see what the market thinks and then, if you want to roll the dice and go for a big gainer, do the opposite. You don't really need to short anything but rather just buy the inverse etf. And get the etf that is the most liquid so you won't be stuck either way. NUGT and DUST for example if you want to play gold before. GUSH or DRIP are working well for oil. Not sure about currency etf's other than UDNT a 3x short I've seen a few times.

So what do you say to the skilled machinist who voted Leave as opposed to the BA Anthropology who voted Remain?

There is always an initial over reaction when a big change happens, but it doesn't always indicate a trend or future economic direction. When the Soviet Union collapsed, many commodities took a big hit and economies all over Europe and Asia were affected for a while. In the long run, not too many people outside of Russian nationalists would argue it wasn't for the best.

The "remain" side pushing doom and gloom scenarios is as much to blame as anything as it is in their best interest to void the results of the democratic referendum. They want to scare people into changing their minds.

It is unfortunate that a handful of racists stole attention away from the other issues. Immigration control is a logical and sensible mechanism to apply. I think we would all agree that you wouldn't want 6 billion people moving to Canada as the country would never survive. That's obviously an exaggeration of what is happening in Europe, but the principle is the same. It's not fair for foreign governments to dictate immigration quotas to countries struggling to absorb them.
