This is an honest question.
Edit: Of course Lucic is playing top line minutes. Brouwer is the question for TOI.
|
Lucic because he will be with McDavid for some of the time.

Both should benefit from that scenario, they would be playing with some pretty talented linemates. Wouldn't surprise me to see both of them have career seasons.

Are you suggesting McDavid wont be available to play top minutes? I'll buy it.

I agree. I dont think either guy will have ever played with (on the same line) as talented of linemates.
But Lucic did have Kopitar and Krejci.
Brouwer never played with Toews or Kaner for an entire season, i may be mistaken tho.

|
That is not the issue. The issue is that with a $6.0 m commitment to Lucic the Oilers still look to be a terrible team for the foreseeable future, while the Flames' fortunes appear arguably much brighter in that timeframe.

I don't think $6M is a bad UFA price for Lucic. And there is no question whatsoever that the Oilers desperately need a player like him.
He will help them for a while (until the reality of Edmonton saps the life from him). But 7 years makes me very happy.

I also think signing Brouwer was a must now that the Oilers have Lucic. Watching Lucic run around gooning Flames, and no one standing up to him, would have been absolutely disgusting.
But now we have an answer

Curious how long Bollig lasts as a Flame next season if he doesnt sheriff that type of game as well as Brouwer.

I think it is a good signing by Oilers. The term on the other hand is a bit of a question mark for me. Lucic will help the Oilers for sure and I hate for the Flames to play this guy. Can he get the Oilers to the playoff finally? I don't think him and McDavid can do it alone.

I don't hate Bollig like some on here do.
However, like with Colborne, I just can't find a place in the lineup for him. He doesn't fit.
But we'll see how things look with a new coach.

Plus the fact it is heavily made up with signing bonuses, so like the Clarkson contract, it is buyout proof.

I'm on the wait for a new coach bandwagon. Hartley was a round of square hole coach like Brent Sutter. Gulutzan gives the forwards more freedom so it'll be interesting.
Gulutzan specifically likes to push players to their best and will allow them more room for mistakes before demotion like with Hartley.

thrilled beyond belief that the Oilers signed Lucic instead of calgary..
will Lucic produce if he's on a line with McDavid? undoubtedly. Will he produce at a clip double to that of anyone pluged in there at 3-4 million? Unlikely...
i can't even recall Lucic making any game changing plays with LA... and based on pure numbers, i am told Lucic had a good year with LA?! as quiet a 50 point player in the league...
i hope Edmonton signs 10 lucics....

I wonder if we ever hear how big a part Treliving played in driving this contract up?

It's unlikely Treliving played any part considering Lucic himself said Calgary's interest waned after they picked up Tkachuk in the draft.

If that's to be believed, it says a lot about management's opinion regarding Tkachuk's chances of being ready for the NHL next season. A player like Brouwer can be more easily bumped down the lineup as needed for a young guy like Matt as he establishes himself. If the Flames get Juolevi instead, the entire dynamic of their forward core in the not-to-distant future is changed drastically, necessitating the need for a now, and future, "true" top 6 power forward.

Does it though? If you're signing Lucic, you're not looking at just next season; he was getting 7 years wherever he went. Tkachuk probably won't be ready for next year, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a problem 3 years from now if they'd signed Lucic.
As for the comparisons with Brouwer, let's tone down the homer in here... Brouwer is not remotely close to being as good as Lucic. Not in the same conversation.

Has anybody ever heard another player basically say the only reason he signed for a team being another player as emphatically and sole focus as Lucic did? There wa no, I'm excited to play with McDavid , plus all these other reasons the org and city are good, it was just all McDavid.
I guess I'm saying that a little critically, but if I was a Oil fan I wouldn't care. Have to say, we can't take away, that for the first time in a decade, they've actually manage to attract sought after UFA talent, so that's got to feel good for them. Lucic will help them for the next few years for sure, he'll make them better. But I am really glad we aren't the ones signing up for 7 years with him.
