Top Line Forward Until Age 34 for 6.0M (May regress into a middle sixer near end of contract)
VS
Middle 6 Forward Until Age 34 for 4.5M (May regress into buyout candidate near end of contract)
GIve me A.

Okposo: complementary forward on the NYI first line.
Brouwer: complementary forward on the StL second line (and now in Calgary, line TBD).
Not the huge difference you seem to let on. But it is a clever bit of semantic juggling to call Brouwer ‘middle 6’ instead of ‘2nd-line’, which is where he has most often been used. Because, you know, it would be a lot less likely for a 2nd-line forward to drop off into buyout territory in four years than for a 3rd-liner.

Lol
They are completely different players! It's like you don't understand that there's more to hockey than racking up points

Brouwer has more goals than Okposo over the last 5 years. Despite the fact that Okposo was riding shotgun with Tavares the whole time.
So you might want to re-evaluate the 1st line vs middle 6 forward comment.
And that completely ignores the fact that Brouwer is big, physical and never takes a shift off. Okposo on the other hand...
I'll take Brouwer all 4 years (and then laugh for the other 3)

Points are what you pay your salary cap for.
Intangibles+ are what you get from the bargain bins, ELCs, bridge contracts etc.
That's how successful teams operate. A guy like Okposo may not be perfect, he may be very flawed, but his tool / skill set is most valuable because you're not getting it from bargain bins, and if you get it from ELCs or bridge contracts you'll be losing it promptly a la the Brandon Saads of the world.
Am I saying it's a great contract? No, I'd have been more comfortable giving him 5.5 x 5 Years. But that's the UFA overpayment and it's more worthwhile for a guy who when added to a strong centreman like Ryan O'Rielly gives you a functional pair that can hang with an elite talent like Crosby or an elite pair like Johnson-Kucherov or Thornton-Pavelski.

The whole "who is he without Tavares" is the only question this deal has. The guy is a top 25 player in the league in terms of scoring rate.
But that "only question" is a pretty huge question, because, yknow, Matt Moulson.
This is absolutely a risky deal. Huge upside, huge downside.

Well agree to disagree on the basic principle you're presenting. I think you pay players based on what they do as a player in all three zones. It's not that Brouwer brings intangibles.
He brings hits, goals, speed, and size. I firmly believe he will be a very productive player for the Flames.
He spent most of last year with Stastny and only scored 4 less goals than Okposo who spent the year with Tavares.
I really believe you're overrating Okposo here. Especially since he's only ever played in one system flanking one of the best centermen in the game.
Will be interesting to see how he does in Buffalo, but I firmly believe that Brouwer is a better fit for us

On what planet?
You can't simply go out and acquire a player on an ELC to fill a hole in your roster. You have to draft them, and if you drafted the player, you wouldn't have a hole.
You also can't simply go out and acquire a player on a bridge contract. The way to give a player a bridge contract, as a general thing, is to have a player coming off his ELC.
Players in bargain bins are usually there for a reason.
Brouwer is a tough physical player who can play effectively up and down the lineup. He's an experienced veteran who can help Bennett and Tkachuk develop their game, as Hudler did for Monahan and Gaudreau. He has won the Stanley Cup and can be a role model for his younger teammates in how to prepare for the playoffs. And he can be relied on for round about 20 goals per season. You don't get that package of qualities out of the bargain bin. You might get those qualities individually from four different bargain-bin players, but then you'd be committing four roster spots that the team does not have available.

Isn't there already a thread to talk about the Brouwer signing?

Yes, but you know the rule. At any given moment, there has to be at least one player on the Calgary Flames' roster whose name comes up in every single thread because someone can't live without using him as a whipping boy. Jankowski and Hamilton have passed their sell-by date, and today it's Brouwer's turn.
Yeah, I know, I know *sigh*

Nah, would rather call you out for your joke posts. Get ready for 4 years of Brouwer shoutouts in PGT bud.

This is a thread about discussing whether Okposo's one of the worse or better contracts signed today. As far as right shooting wingers, these were the two biggest contracts dealt out, so it's only natural they'd be compared.
