Did Brad not sign Hiller and Ramo last year??? I could be wrong. But I thought he was responsible for both those goalies last year.

former football player Chad Johnson once legally changed his name to Ochocinco.

So what is the plan then? If both do their job do they extend both near end of season and then expose Johnson?

Nope hiller was already signed. He did re-sign Ramo after losing out on Jones and Talbot though. Ramo was clearly his plan B

This year's goalie market does not equal last year's goalie market. Neither of these guys was available last year, and Hiller was signed 2 years ago, not last year. Unless you planned to buy out the guy that was the 1A going into last season, it doesn't make sense to get mad about Hiller. Ramo proved to be the best goalie out of the bunch, but got injured. Re-signing Ramo was actually a good thing, otherwise we could have been the favorite to get Auston Matthews (not really a bad thing, but finishing last certainly is bad).

I love how people can only harp on the couple of bad things that happened, and never give credit for all the good things done. Very narrow viewpoint.

A big meh on this signing. Not terrible, but likely of no consequence whatsoever. I probably would have preferred to let Ortio back-up Elliot.

He was responsible for them being here but that doesn't make him responsible for their play falling off a cliff

I can't say I watched the Sabres very much last season, but was surprised how good Johnson's stats were. Surprised he was willing to sign only a 1 year deal for so little.

Way better signing already. Both Johnson and Elliott together is cheaper than hiller last year

Really like this signing for a backup goalie. Given the total lack of pro experience in Stockton, had to believe they weren't going with Ortio.

Yeah some pretty good stats but he just doesn't seem to have been able to establish himself. Goalie is the most important position but I guess there are just too many of them. IIRC he's getting a $100,000 raise from last season which isn't bad in the real world. Fathers don't let your kids to grow up to be goalies.

Same here. I would have rather see Ortio as a backup and he'll probably be cheaper than Johnson. I only thing I can think of is Treliving is thinking Jon Gillies will be ready to be in the NHL next season and Ortio must be looking for a longer term that Brad couldn't afford to give him.

It is very interesting that both of our new goalies will be UFAs next year. Maybe a stop gap situation?

I think people are under-rating Johnson. He should be an ideal backup goalie - experienced with solid NHL numbers.

Ortio showed promise, but would you really feel ok with him getting 30+ starts? Elliott has never started more than 46 in a season. I'm more comfortable with Johnson getting that workload.
