It'll probably work out for a bit, $6M isnt outrageous. But this is Khabibulin/Ference/Ridiculous Hossa/Jagr offers all over again.
"We got him! Granted, we had to pay more than anyone else by a huge margin, but we got him!"
At the same time they shipped out Taylor Hall a 24 year old ~70 point winger on a $6M/7 to bring in a 28 year old ~50 point winger?
Sure, Larsson is in there too but....Larsson. Solves few to no Oiler needs.
Say what you want about Chiarelli, but this is no different than MacT and Lowe's 'Big Game Hunting.'
Absolutely no awareness on how to build a team.

Not exactly true, it's already been reported that Montreal offered him more money

Yes, the only other equally desperate team. Smallest and weakest team in the East.
Also I understood they offered more money but only 6 years, I could be wrong on that though.
Either way, I stand by my statement of: Just Stupid.

More money in Montreal has to be way more money though. They have a good 10% higher tax rate.

Well yeah, but it's all the same playing field in terms of cap hits.

Yeah but players aren't wanting the biggest cap hit, they want the biggest money.

So they said that a lot of the AAV was the big signing bonus, so how does that affect the buyout?
Maybe the plan is to make it to the end of the NMC (5 years when it switches to limited NTC) and buy him out.

I know that. But a 7 million dollar cap hit is worse for a team than a 6 million dollar cap hit. We're saying the exact same thing here. Montreal was willing to take a bigger hit against their cap for the same player.

Do we know their offer was 7? I haven't seen that, just a rumour they offered more.

Wow. You really think Lucic is going to be useful in 6-7 years oilers?
Now one of the kids will be pushed out when the raises start coming around for rebuild 3.0

He will probably pay some immediate dividends but as everyone has stated, long term this contract will hurt them.
I still don't see the Oilers as significantly improved though. They still won't make the playoffs.

Just spoke with Lucic himself 5 minutes ago. He and his girl just caught a plane here in Van, with my employer, and he had some interesting things to say.
-Shook his hand and told him I am a Flames fan, he laughed about it and was good about it. I congradulated him on the deal and said I look forward to a more entertaining battle of Alberta.
-I asked why the Oil, he says the new arena is world class, super impressed, couldn't believe it when he was given the tour.
-Says Flames had interest leading up to draft, contacted him/agent, but when Tkachuk fell to them, then interest seemingly dried up (Thanks Tre, dodged a 42 million dollar bullet IMO)
-I asked if he knew if Hall was getting traded. He said he had an idea he was. Had some hearsay "rumors" about his presence in the locker room and such, of which I won't be repeating. No source to confirm about another player.
-I asked about Van and he said "the Family" gets too involved, along with the cutthroat media, etc, it just wasn't a good fit. Loves the city though.
-I ended with "McDavid huh, pretty excited?" Big smile and said for sure, he's a wicked good player.
This year should be interesting. Nice enough guy nonetheless.
And I'm almost his size. Looks bigger on tv. Always interesting to compare in person.

Asking rhetorically, but if the options were LA for 6x6 or Edmonton for 7x6, isn't LA the easy and obvious choice?
I know some will say it's an extra $6MM, but that's not enough extra for me to make that move.

The Hall comments about his off ice life and his locker room presence really are telling, sounds like a guy you don't want in your team.
