He played with Robbi Fabbri (who arguably had a better rookie season than Bennett) and Paul Stastny (who has a Backlund-esque history of his wingers having career seasons - David Jones, Nathan McKinnon, etc).

The most important thing about this trade is the Flames got bigger today. And not just bigger because of Brouwer's physical size. The whole team got bigger because Brouwer is the type of guy that will step up and beat the #### out of someone for doing something stupid. The Flames haven't had this type of player since McGrattan. The Flames haven't had this in a player that can play a shift on the top lines since Iginla left. Johnny Hockey just grew another six inches. Shinkarek just took another step to earning a full time position. Small guys just got that much bigger because they know someone has their backs! Hopefully Ferland and Hathaway learn from Brouwer's example and that willingness to stand up for your fellow players become infectious.

The guy has averaged almost 21 goals a season over the last 4 years.

Lucic has averaged 17 goals a season over the last 4 years.

He has scored more goals than Lucic in 3 of the last 4 seasons.

He has averaged more goals than Backes.

Not sure how many 3rd or 4th liners in the NHL average 21 goals a year.

We clearly have another hole to fill because there's no way anyone should be penciling in Chiasson top six at this point. That's wishful thinking.

Averages are per game. Basically we get a player who averages as many goals and close to as many hits as Lucic but is way less of a liability PIM wise. I am not arguing Brouwer > Lucic as points are in Lucic favor but for 1.5 million less and 4 years vs 7 I am very happy with the Brouwer signing.
Definitely better than the Lucic deal.
Objectively, how much better?

I really hope that Hathaway makes the team. With the size that the Flames have added, I think that his agitating style will lead to a lot of emotional and physical games this year. It's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

If Tkachuk makes the team, the Flames are really going to have a bunch of players that other teams hate to play against.

why? I hope they get better. May they improve a bit and then stay in 9th-11th hell in the WC forever.

What an odd thing to be worried about.

They're at a monumental level of terrible. It's inevitable they improve eventually.

But with how terrible they are, an improvement from that point still puts them a league below mediocre.

So no need to fret.

Why? Juxtaposing one team's depth chart against another's almost never provides enough information about what matters most in game situations.

The Oilers were a TERRIBLE team by every metric last year. They couldn't score, nor could they keep pucks out of their end and their goal. I have serious doubts that the changes made in the past two weeks makes them much better than merely below average.

For the Flames the improvement in goal on its own makes them a playoff team.

Try

Gaudreau-Monahan-Brouwer
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Bennett-Chiasson
Bouma-Stajan-Hathaway

Second line looks a bit better. Depending on Smid and Wideman, there's still a chance with Colborne. If he stays, maybe Frolik can move to the left.

I don't why, but the Flames management and players seem to be really close together. Good relationships from both sides.

People that worry that the Oilers are getting better. Its not a vacuum, Calgary improved, Winnipeg is probably going to be better, ARizona, Nashville and Minny certainly improved their linups. So its not a matter that the Oilers merely have to improve by 17 points, they have to massively improve over even the non playoff teams that finished about them.

And I don't think they've done enough to improve that much this week. I mean Lucic is a poor mans version of Hall in terms of an offense that finished 26th. Larsson is a nice piece, but will he improve their blueline massively I don't think so.

the good thing is that Brouwer and Frolik can definitely play up and down the lineup, and if Chiasson rebounds, he can as well. So in those lineup posts, the #1 RW spot will probably always look a bit disappointing, but on the ice, it gives the Flames a lot of flexibility on the right side.

Bennett needs more to work with than this - unless the objective is to get him cheap on the next contract.
