that is NOT when the rebuild started, maybe should have restarted but the rebuild did not start until we got rid of Iggy in 2013.

Maybe he has more salary to shed first. Maybe that's what the Raymond buyout was for. It's hard to say, but what we do know is its a process, and you have to trust the process.
I guess my main concern is that they get offer sheeted, but everyone seems pretty confident they won't, just wondering what that confidence is based on.

Nobody's complained about Hamilton having a great second half.

You mean his career norm? That's not the same at all. Dougie had a 20 game bad stretch over 3 years. Colborne had a 30 game good stretch over 3 years. Proves my point more than yours...

Only a half hour left until the buyout window closes.

Not looking good for Colborne or Ortio resigning with the Flames. Looking more like they will explore free angency.

I'm still failing to comprehend how someone sees possessing a first round pick and happening to hit a home run in the fourth round as signaling the start of a rebuild.

No kidding. I think the rebuild started in Ernest when Burke was hired but you can make the argument it was when the flames dealt iginla.

It's pretty clear when the Flames rebuild started, and I don't really think there is any room for debate.

It started in the lockout shortened 2012/13 season when the Flames dealt Iginla and Bouwmeester at the deadline~ and went to the 2013 draft with three 1st round picks.

We're just lucky we already had Johnny and Brodie in the system. It's sped things up a little.

Just finished year 3. My expectations for year 4 are to hopefully have a couple more young players force their way onto the roster (Tkachuk and Shinkaruk seem most likely at this point), have Bennett take a Monahan-like step forward and have to the team push for a playoff spot.

Year 5 (2017/18) is where I'm hoping they really start to contend. Most of the dead weight should be off the bottom of the roster, and loads of young talented players should be taking those jobs, like Janko, Mangiapane, Poirier, Klimchuk, Anderssen, Kylington, Gillies, etc.

What does everyone think of Shinkaruk? I saw him awhile back when he was in juniors and he did not standout that night. I hope he turns out for us. I know he should not judge on 1 night but that was my first impression

I see him quite frequently, he's really bulking up and looks quite good. I feel he'll be on the team next season.

You saw him in junior, once? Did you not watch him when he played with the Flames last year?

Sometimes the rebuild starts before teams realize it and take action to do so. Vancouver's rebuild started in 2014, yet they likely won't officially kick it off for another couple years.

2011 was the first year where the Flames began focusing on skill rather than on grinders like they did in most of the prior drafts. They didn't commit all in until 2013 because there was no alternative to keep the veteran group together.

They just couldn't accept going all out into the rebuild until the same crap that happened in 2010, 2011, and 2012 was happening again in 2013. It was the same refusal to accept reality that probably lengthened the process, just like it did in Vancouver and Edmonton.

A change in drafting philosophy isn't a rebuild. A rebuild is when you accept the current group isn't doing it any you move out your core assets for futures.

The Iginla trade started the rebuild.

Different GM had different draft philosophies but that doesn't mean rebuild. Feaster was quite adamant actually that he was going for the playoffs. The only
Thing he said he wouldn't do is trade first round picks but he almost traded the 2013 pick (and lost it for nothing)

When the team decided to trade Iginla and Bouwmeester the rebuild began.

I don't think you could argue the rebuild began in 2011 when he offer sheeted O'Reilly in 2013. You can't forfeit 1st round picks for high dollar players if you're rebuilding. Especially when that move is motivated entirely by 'We gotta put together one last run with the core'.

I think you're arguing semantics. He's simply saying the rebuild started before they knew they were rebuilding. If you call the start of the rebuild (as most do) when you're intentionally rebuilding then you're right. He's just saying the events that begin a rebuild really probably stay before the team decides to rebuild
