This is also part of the risk of playing for the hometown team. Your friends and family all live here, all follow the team, and when things go south they all probably hear about it too. I feel sorry for him, and for his family who have been incredibly generous through charities. I am just also glad that he is no longer a Flame, and sorry it didn't work out for him.

You can understand why a guy like Mike Green won't even think about playing at 'home'. Some players love playing at home, but there is always extra pressure, and the possibility of it ending badly.

Good luck to Mason Raymond, and I hope he picks up a PTO somewhere. If he hangs around long enough for the expansion, he may just translate that into another multi-year contract with someone, provided he has a good season like he did in Toronto.

Oh happy day! I got a little scared there when Gulutzan was talking about Raymond as a reclamation project. Raymond was by far the worst player on the Flames the past couple years. Good to see us moving on and hopefully the 2 million saved helps us land someone useful.

If he is wearing skates at the time, highly unlikely. Anyone went near him the last two years he ended up on his butt.

But who's gonna stick handle aimlessly into the offensive zone around the net and fire the puck all the way back down the ice now?

I'm so conflicted about this, he seems like such a nice guy and yet I'm elated that hes gone.

I want to celebrate, but then I dont.

Curse you!

As a Flames fan, I'm more than happy he's gone. Nature of the business, the ones that have the great attitudes and nice personas are usually kept around after their careers are done. Just ask Craig Conroy and Martin Gelinas. Heck, there was chatter about Brian MacGrattan in town for an office position not too long ago as well.

I'm only excited he is gone because I won't have to hear people complaining about him. So I guess I'm just excited that I won't have to hear complaining about him for another year.

Craig Button bought out Martin St. Louis I believe. The rules were different then though.

From an organizational perspective I'm glad this problem is dealt with. His cap hit is reasonable now, we dont have to deal with this anymore.

"Low risk signing" tag aside, doesn't that honor go to Setoguchi? I guess the own goal against Vancouver was pretty brutal.....

Nope, people will still complain about him for as long as he is on the cap, so 2 more years

Out of site, out of mind. It won't be quite so bad.

So burying him in the minors results in a $2.2 million cap hit this year and nothing next year. Buying him out saves $1 million in cap this year, but costs an extra $1 million next year.

This buyout has nothing to do with cap savings and mostly about saving the organization $1 million dollars in actual salary.

The Flames don't ever seem to skimp on salary but this also shows it's a real business and the owners won't spend money wantonly. Really wish the guy could have shown something.

Burying him in the minors also takes a spot away from a developing prospect, something that may have been a factor as well
