Montreal looses big on this trade. Weber isn't the same player he once was, and his contract is going to look brutal in a couple years. While Subban wasn't going to work in Montreal as long as Bergevin was there, would have thought they could have done better.

Terrible deal! Mind numbingly bad for Canadians. They could have done so much more with PK Subban in terms of trade value.
This is gonna be a trade that will bite them in the ass a couple years down the road.

Bottom line on the Subban trade, from an NHL GM: "If you think Subban is one of the 15 best D-men in the NHL, it's a bad deal. I don't."

I think Weber is going to be fine for Montreal - even though it's a terrible trade for the Habs. Weber's been playing against St Louis and Chicago his whole career (and doing well at it), and I think even though there are good teams out East, the grind won't be nearly as intense as that horrific Central.

So, this is a Bergevin quote, right?

I haven't waded through the entire thread, so I'm sorry if I'm making a point that has been already made.
I seriously doubt this trade happens if the dollar was at or near par still. It's hard to see this as anything but bottom line savings for the Canadiens ownership. Regardless of actual cap implications that the GMs need to manage, Weber is getting paid $54M of his $110M contract over the final 10 years, with $48M of that paid in the next 6 years. Subban is getting paid $58M of his $72M contract in the final 6 years. The Canadiens saved $10M over the next 6 years with this deal. What's the time value of $10M spread out over 6 years?

This means there's at least one skater from a Canadian-based team on Team Canada for the World Cup now.

This was the exact scenario I was thinking of. You could tell by the reaction of his teammates that his antics were played out to many of the guys in the room. A couple just pretended that he didn't exist and kept on taping their sticks without even half a smile or any eye contact.....big red flag when I saw it

I haven't read through the whole thread but I feel like in the minority for thinking this is a fairly fair deal for both sides; Weber is a better defenceman than Subban any day of the week. His contract, yikes, but straight up player for player - I don't think MTL loses here. Heck if anything, they just improved...

I'm assuming we're living in a world where the red line is still a meaningful part of offside rules and the trapezoid doesn't exist, and bottom 6ers are all AHL scrubs who can punch face....

20g, 51p last season. He's basically a lock for those types of numbers each of the past seven seasons. He's showing no signs of slowing down, offensively.

Yeah, I'm not getting the lop sided reaction to this trade.

That was in response to his defensive game , not offensive , he's still a beast on the powerplay

For me the loss is in the community. On ice I feel the same way you do. But the impact Subban has had on MTL makes today really tough.
Add in the fact the NSH is on the hook for the recapture penalties this makes it a good trade for MTL too. They save some money and avoid Subbans NTC.

I guess we'll see who makes out like winners on this one. It's easy to say Preds as Subban is a more dynamic player and younger, and joining an up and coming team I think ready to make another deep run next season.
But I still think Weber suits the Habs defensively. He's still a beast on the back end. This is far from one-sided.

I'm probably in the minority who thinks Subban is overrated, but this is still a brutal return.
