Craig Button like the trade from Edmonton's perspective. He justified it by talking about how he traded Cory Stillman for Craig Conroy once upon a time. Y'okay...

Ha, no. I just really don't think Larrson has much potential. In fact I'm glad that the cost was Hall as I think the Oilers lost this deal big time.

who cares about +/- ... there have been numerous Norris Trophy winners with less than +15. Karlsson was +7 when he won it in 2015, Subban was +12 when he won it in 2013, Lidstrom was -2 when he won it in 2011.

I remember that day so well because I actually emailed Button and tore into him about that deal and he actually replied. Something to the effect of how little playoff experience Stillman had and that Conroy was a winner and Cory Stillman was the type of player that would never be a winner in the playoffs and would never win anything. Turned out Conroy was a good player but as for what he said about Stillman, 2 Stanley Cups later...

I'm a little concerned that by dealing Schultz and now Hall, the Oilers are considering making a serious run at finishing 9-11 in the WC instead of dwelling in the basement.
These deals may end up being your classic "addition by subtraction" kind of trades. In terms of the overall roster's Hockey IQ, it may be more of a case of multiplication by subtraction.

I think the Oilers just got much better. Not only is it addition by subtraction but I think Larsson is due to break out. Remember, this guy has had garbage in front of him to play with. I really don't like this trade.

When your 25th in league scoring, what you do is trade your second best offensive player for a defensive defenseman.....I like it!!!

May be the reason the Oilers traded Hall is that Lowe wants his number back! He wants his number hanging from the brand new rink!

I like Larsson's potential but... man, that is a brutal return for Taylor Hall. He may be lacking in hockey IQ but he has some physical tools you just can't teach. Of all their recent first rounders I think he's been the most consistently successful forward *other than McJesus of course*. To me this is just another step backwards for the Oil.

Just noticed that Larsson hasn't had a power play point since 2012

This is far from the worst trade of the last decade. Larsson is currently a good young #3 D, with a decent chance of developing into something better than that. There are lots of trades where front-line players went for scraps that weren't even playing in the NHL a few years later. Forsberg for Erat comes to mind, and that was only a couple years ago.

Not really. Really situational and prone to giant fluctuations

Larsson played like 13 minutes total on the pp last year. I actually like this move for the Oilers

If they'd traded Hall for Jones straight up there would be many fewer dissenters, they'd have gotten a better player and Jones just signed a great deal, but Chia was too busy sitting on his hands.

Yes, but I doubt Nashville would have traded Jones for Hall. Jones is more valuable than Hall, hence they got a better return in Johansen.

I liked the Petry comparison, fair or not.
Telling Oilers fans that they just traded Hall for Petry 2.0 just helps them digest this trade so much better.
