Don't get it twisted I don't think it was a fair trade from value. I just think a lot of people really have no clue what kind of player he is. There's no reason they should, the Devils have been pretty irrelevant recently. This isn't the worst trade the Oilers could have made. Also, Larsson is at least as good as Hamonic.
Perhaps Larsson is part of the reason the Devils offense was so bad. Or was it everyone else's fault? How is he jumping to 30 points all of a sudden? People are giving too much credit to a player continuing to grow into their mid 20's these days. Most players have shown their cards by the time they are 23/24 in the league now and there is little room for improvement. For every late bloomer like Giordano there are 100 guys that never quite took the next step.

In 275 games he's managed 69 points and he's going to put up nearly half that in one season with the Oilers? Players that average 1 shot per game for the better part of 4 seasons don't suddenly become competent offensive players. He probably is a good defenceman but he's not anywhere near being a true 1st pairing guy.

Top pairing players are difference makers in all three zones.

To be fair, not many of us would have had the chance to really watch Larsson unless the Devils played the Flames or for some reason someone on CP follows the Devils as much as they did Calgary. Other then his name, he's a relatively unknown for most fans here and I doubt anybody has really truly taken the time to sit, watch and analyse him like they would say Brodie. So I'll take the world of Devils' fans when they say it's a big loss for them.

From what I've read, he seems like a poor man's Erik Johnson. Drafted pretty high, good defensively, but could never quite put it together offensively. He can still be on a 1st pairing, but more in a complimentary role then the guy anchoring the line. Potential to be a decent #2 if everything goes right for him.

We'll see how it goes. IMO the Oilers lost the better player, but Larsson will help their team much more so then Hall ever would.

I'm not sure this trade is as lopsided as most seem to think. Certainly not the worst 1-for-1 trade in the past 30 years. Hall isn't as good as people think and Larsson isn't as bad. Reality is, and I've said this before, the oilers have to lose these trades if they want to make them. They obviously lost this one, player value-wise, but the trade had to be made and now it has.

This signals the beginning of the rebuild, what, v5.0? Did anyone other than CP predict that the golden boy 1stOA Hall would be traded before this sad-sack team had even a sniff of the playoffs? The Hall, RNH, Eberle era is over, their greatest achievement being that they suck so damn bad they were able to land McDingus, Draisatl, and Magnus Puljujarvi-Svensson or whatever his name is. Yakupov, obviously not even worth mentioning.

If Larsson hits his stride and lives up to his billing, this could be a big win for the oilers. Thankfully for Flames fans everywhere, NO ONE lives up to their potential when they play for the oilers. No one. The oilers, of all teams, developing a young, potential 1D? Yeah, I don't think so. He'll be thrown to the wolves shortly and will be traded for a forth rounder in a couple seasons, eventually winning the Masterton trophy a couple seasons after that.

What's Larssons billing though? a #3 with the potential to be a #2?

Great try to pigeonhole another defensemen into the number 1 role who doesn't fit.

I'm not sure how Scott Cullen is viewed amongst fans, but he calls it a landslide win for the Devils: http://www.tsn.ca/statistically-spea...-hall-1.517957

Pretty much. Another Petry which will likely be given up on within 2 years because he couldn't fit the forced role.

seems like Larsson is best as a #3... can't see him shutting down any teams top lines?

i just think its hysterical....that's why you DRAFT defensemen... getting legit 1 and 2s is extremely difficult and you tend to waaaaay overpay for them or you get them just a year before they start declining...

I get drafting Puljujarvi; that was a gift... but expending your second on yet another forward?! that's just dumb beyond belief

Whats really funny is if you think about it in retrospect.

The Oilers got Larsson for Hall. Why were they not in the deal for Seth Jones?

If they'd traded Hall for Jones straight up there would be many fewer dissenters, they'd have gotten a better player and Jones just signed a great deal, but Chia was too busy sitting on his hands.

The Oilers have traded Taylor Hall for a player who is the equivalent of what Jeff Petry was for them 3 years ago (At that time Petry was 25, Larsson is 23 now)

Qualify that statement. How did Brodie excel against very tough competition vs. Larsson not excelling? Brodie scored more points, sure, but he was only a +4 on a much better offensive team. Or does Brodie get to blame his goaltending, but Larsson doesn't get to blame his terrible forwards for his lack of points. Larsson was +15 on the worst scoring team in the NHL. Seems to me that he did pretty good. Also started in the defensive zone 70% of the time. The worst in the NHL. Brodie was 50%.

Edit; Want to clarify that I think Brodie > Larsson, but i have a feeling most people saying that Larsson isn't that great have never seen him play.

Or they could of just drafted Larsson instead of Nugent Hopkins and still kept Hall.

Is there a reason why this is? Just a coaching thing? A recognition that both Larsson and Greene have limited offence so they get stuck with all of the defensive assignments/responsibility?

Let's make a wager on 30 pts or better than for this season. $50 to Calpuck for the loser?

You assume Nashville would take Hall. Sounded like Nashville very specifically wanted a centre, and didn't want RNH, which is what the Oulers offered. Doubt Hall landed them Jones, or would have likely been done,
