Yeah they are so disgruntled with Monahan that they invited him to greet the prospects on the stage last weekend with the captain

What if let's say we are having trouble signing Monahan? What if his demands are too high? What if there is something about him? What if someone like Brad and/or Burke simply has a real hankering to acquire a guy like Stamkos?

Is it possible we instead pull a rabbit out and get Stamkos?

I dunno I got a weird feeling Flames might be interested July 1st.

We all know Brad keeps his cards close...

The Flames being interested in Stamkos wouldn't shock me at all.

Right shot
26 years old
Top 2-3 goal scorer in the league

The forward core would be set to build around for the next 5-7 years with:

Stamkos
Gaudreau
Monahan
Bennett
Tkachuk

I would be more shocked if Stamkos decided to come here than I would at the Flames being interested.

I also don't see your hunch on Monahan being true either.

I just don't see it. I also think Stamkos will stay in the Eastern conference no matter what.

steve simmons @simmonssteve
SOURCES: Maple Leafs met with Steven Stamkos at MLSE headquarters Tuesday. Also present: Toronto Mayor John Tory and CEO of Canadian Tire.

To circumvent the salary cap, Leafs obviously working on a deal to pay Stamkos in Canadian Tire money.

I wonder if Stamkos will be happy playing 2nd fiddle to Auston.

Based on reports earlier this year, he much prefers the C position to the wing.

That Canadian Tire thing is interesting - remember Canadian Tire now owns the Forzani's group so Sport Chek and Pro Hockey Life now fall under that branch.

Feels a little fishy IMO but I would not be surprised at all if Stamkos becomes the face of Sport Chek in Canada, dependent on him signing in Toronto.

Also don't think you can enforce penalties under the cap rules - Canadian Tire is it's own separately owned corporation. Foolish of the Leafs to bring him in directly to the pitch meeting though - would have tried to keep it a little more separate.

If Stamkos is smart, he'll lob Phil Kessel a phone call before he signs in Toronto.

Like I said in another thread, I wonder if Edmonton is quietly putting something together. I was thinking a trade and sign involving Nug and a 1st?
