Maybe when the dust settles they can trade Wideman, but i think he ends up on opening day roster. Have to think his NMC makes it very hard for them to trade him. I doubt he would waive to go to a team that has no chance at playoffs ( Edmonton). It would mean moving now and then moving again come tradedeadline.
|
There were unsubstantiated rumors that Treliving denied. I don't think it was a serious option until close to the deadline. I wouldn't be shocked for a second if it was the same again this year. With Russell gone and Jokipakka being a big question mark in the top 4, it makes more sense to hold onto Wideman. The only way he gets bought out tomorrow is if the Flames are going hard after Lucic or Okposo.

I think the buyout rather then hiding in the minors is the classy way to do it. It allows Raymond a shot to try and get something else to try to keep his career going.

He had a great year in Toronto post back injury so I'm not sure that's a fair assessment. His first year in Calgary was up and down, but doable. Last year was a complete disaster. I would have liked to see what he could do under a new, less bull headed head coach before writing everything off.
It always mystified me that Hartley refused to use Raymond as a PKer when it was always a major strength of his.

Unlikely.
Trade, retain salary more likely, if you really need the cap space this year?

Well, with Raymond being bought out, and hypothetically if Wideman was as well, that would free up enough space to take a run at an Okposo or Lucic type player.
Next year we would have Engelland, Bollig, Smid coming off the books which frees up enough space to sign Kevin, Benny, and Elliot potentially.

Tre could not find a single taker at 50% retained? Because that would have made way more sense financially IMO.

Also, don't forget that this year if Smid can't play, we will get LTIR relief once the season starts.

Assuming $6.75M each for Monahan and Gaudreau (the Giordano-limit), $800k for Wotherspoon, $600K for Ortio, and including Shinkaruk, that leaves the Flames with 21 contracts and $10.4M in cap space (excluding Smid who I expect will be LTIR).
If Tkachuk makes it, that's 22 players and $9.5M in space.
I think we can expect UFA activity.

I hope you are not suggesting Treliving didn't try to trade him at 50% off? Buyout was last resort.
Even at $1.6 million no team would trade for Raymond. There will be better players than him signing PTO's this summer.

Those salaries coming off the books would pay for Raymond and Wideman's buyout cap hits with a little left over. Maybe enough for Elliott.

I'm not sure they would buy him out if they didn't plan to use at least some of that 2 million that are saving.

I think Trei just has it out for Calgary boys right now. Get rid of them all. Shinkaruk, you're next.

I think they just have a limit on the number of Cochrane players. The writing was on the wall when they drafted Dube.

Signing Raymond was probably Treliving's biggest mistake, but if that is your biggest mistake then you're doing pretty well. Raymond was a very inconsistent player and should never have received more than a 1 year deal.
I like the buyout, you don't want a unhappy veteran player playing for your AHL team.

One has to think a big move will be coming sometime this summer for the flames. There's no sense opening up all this cap space (buying out Raymond, not qualifying guys) then doing nothing with it. Frig, at this point Calgary has enough space that they could have taken on the Datsyuk contract if they had wanted to. A big FA or a big trade is in the works I think.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was all just to throw huge money at Monahan & Gaudreau, like Voracek money

Just wanted to correct myself as these numbers counted Raymond as a contract. Should be:
20 contracts and $10.4M in cap space, or
21 contracts and $9.5M in space
(these numbers do not include Colborne)
