You sure that's what happened or you just making things up? Could have sworn he had the exact same gig from early 2000's When Burke was Canucks GM well thru his time in Anaheim and into Toronto and the same gig during the Canucks run in 2011.

You really need to get your facts straight before spitting out pure trash.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris

Bill Daly has spoken to #canucks GM Jim Benning about his tampering comments. Expect a penalty to be announced in the next few days.

I'm pretty sure they got revealed during the Coyotes bankruptcy process - at least in part. I know part of the league constitution was released as well.

Daly hints there will be punishment

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/n...ned-tampering/

Quote:
The deputy commissioner has already had a discussion with Benning and Canucks president Trevor Linden and hinted that some form of punishment was coming.

“They understand where we are on this situation,” said Daly. “We talked about announcing something early next week.”

There aren’t too many instances of tampering fines being released publicly – at least since a $25,000 penalty imposed on the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009 after coach Ron Wilson said in a radio interview that the team was interested in pending free agents Henrik and Daniel Sedin.

A window for teams to have contract discussions with unrestricted free agents opened at 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday, so comments like the one Benning made about Stamkos would be allowed now. But it was verboten beforehand.

Daly indicated that there’s a sliding scale of punishment for tampering based on how severe the infraction was.

“We’ve had a couple of instances where team people have spoken out of school,” he said. “I’m not sure if we’ve announced the penalties associated with them. There’s a lot of different factors involved in something like that. You have to see if there was damage done by the comments.

“Typically, if it’s perceived as more of a violation than any damage done, it might be less. Really depends on the circumstances.”

$25,000 per player spoken about sounds about right.

I don't see how a GM didn't have bells ringing off in his head when talking about those players. You'd think a GM would know better. It's one thing when it's a coach (Ron Wilson) who isn't paid to know the CBA but a GM?

Even as I listened to him speak I knew what he was saying was breaking tampering rules.
The Canucks and their fans couldn't have found a better GM that they deserve.

Benning: "The thing that bothers me the most about this is that it will make it all the more difficult for me when I try to lure UFA's like Jamie Benn and Brad Marchand here next summer."

All Benning had to say was what every other GM says when asked a bait question like the one about Stamkos.

"I can't get into the specifics but our team is always interested in ways to get better through the UFA market and we will persue the UFA market very hard for ways to get better".

I do feel a little for him because by all accounts he's a really nice guy that was giving the media and fans what they want in a frank interview. That said a man in his position should know the boundaries to which he can't disclose information.

He said he would be calling Stamkos as soon as the courting period would start and that he confirmed that he made an offer to Montreal for Subban.
