I hope it's somewhere no one expects. Somewhere seemingly random like Carolina or Dallas or New Jersey.

Despite how badly Detroit wants Stamkos, I don't think there is any doubt that he ends up in Toronto. While contract terms will likely be fairly close regardless of who he signs with, his endorsement value will be spectacularly higher in Toronto than any other market. That's why I 'm putting my money on the Leafs winning this one.

Risto will get his second contract this year, likely long-term somewhere in the $5 million-ish range (we have the cap space for this right now, along with a mega deal for Stamkos).
End of next season you have Gionta (4.25 million) and Franson (3.3 million) expiring and likely not re-signed. End of season after that you have Kane (5.25 mllion) and Gorges (3.9 million) expiring. So that's nearly $17 million in players easily replaced by cheaper options or even ELC guys like Guhle or Nylander before Eichel and Reinhart come up for new contracts. Players like Ennis or Moulson could be traded or bought out, or even left exposed in the expansion draft and potentially claimed. There's always ways to make room.

No. It will not. This is such a tired myth.
Stamkos is already the #3 most highly compensated NHL player in endorsements. Sidney Crosby is #1, and earned $4.5 m in deals with Reebok, Gatorade, Rogers Communications, CCM, Tim Horton’s, Upper Deck, Verizon and Frameworth. Virtually all of the "big-money" endorsement deals are offered by national and multi-national corporations, and none of them seem to care where any individual player plays. How many local Toronto companies are going to be lining up to sign Stamkos to push product for +$1.0 m per year? He already has big deals from Nike, Bauer, Coca-Cola and Tissot watches. Are any of these companies going to suddenly pay him more money because he wears a Maple Leafs jersey? Will all the Ford dealers in Southern Ont. pool their resources to make Stamkos the highest earning NHL star? No way.

Not sure if repost but cherry has a sweet belligerent rant on why Stamkos will sign in Toronto. https://mobile.twitter.com/CoachsCor...503946752?s=08

so this is a cut and paste from bob mccowans twitter feed ( https://twitter.com/fadoobobcat):
Do the Leafs have a plan to pay Stamkos 3.5M in non-cap dollars per year thru marketing? Told the proposal has been vetted!
if this winds up happening then we are back to the good old days and I am guessing this loophole could not be closed until the next CBA - I am assuming that his agent figured this out

McCown is an idiot. And that would be blatant cap circumvention. As in, not even a loophole. Sections 26.2 and 26.3 of the CBA make it pretty clear that the teams cant do things like this. At least, not in any fashion that leaves an evidence trail of course.

Has to be done like with Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy for it to work.
Adidas gave Beckham extra $$$ if he came to play for the MLS in the U.S.
Could somebody like Adidas (new manufacturer of NHL jerseys) be proposing the same thing to Stamkos right now?

Yeah I have no idea how that would be allowed by the NHL.
Why stop there? Why not give the guy a $60 million 'marketing' contract and only pay him $1 million per year for the cap savings? Why can't Pegula ride up and give him a $10 million non-cap cash "gift"?

The Clippers just got caught doing this in the NBA last year. They resigned DeAndre Jordan, but did so with promises he'd get some advertising money on the side. The punishment? A $250,000 fine which seems like a total joke and an easy fine to pay to get a top talent.

The NHL's CBA calls for multi-million dollar fines and the loss of top draft picks, so being caught doing something like that in the NHL would theoretically carry a far greater penalty.
I say theoretically, because the NHL has already decided to ignore its own CBA for Lamourello's benefit at least once in the past.

Also would be hard to stop.
Hard to control if it's 3rd party company with no ties to the Leafs. If they approach a player who is UFA and say "We think your marketing potential in Toronto is much higher than in Tampa Bay, if you sign there we will add a couple million to your endorsement deal".
If that happens you can't really penalize the Leafs for it.

This is insane I realize...
But given today's Raymond buy-out it has me extra suspicious.
What if let's say we are having trouble signing Monahan? What if his demands are too high? What if there is something about him? What if someone like Brad and/or Burke simply has a real hankering to acquire a guy like Stamkos?
Is it possible we instead pull a rabbit out and get Stamkos?
I dunno I got a weird feeling Flames might be interested July 1st.
We all know Brad keeps his cards close...

Yes, it is. Until something like this actually happens in the NHL—EVER, then it will remain a myth. Unlike the NBA scenarios there are no national corporations who will shell out enormous cash payments to a player on the basis of the team for which he plays.

They may or may not be interested in Stamkos, but that has nothing to do with Monahan. He will be signed soon.

Stamkos to Calgary would be... epic, to say the least. It's so not going to happen, lol.
