It's a 1 year awarded season. Colborne would've been a UFA even if they avoided arbitration and accepted a 1 year prove it contract.
There was no loss to Colborne going to arbitration. It's not like he was going to be awarded 5 million or more.

Not giving all the negotiating power to Colborne was a mistake? How so?
You realize if he had been qualified and gone to arbitration we'd be locked in to his likely awarded $3 - $4 mil for a year, right? Freddie Hamilton and Wotherspoon were not risks to be awarded significant amounts that the Flames would be forced to pay.
Treliving played this well, and is proving his worth all the more with shrewd moves like this.

Give it a rest. Did Colborne sign elsewhere? We don't know whether he will be retained or not until he signs with another team. Even if he decides to try out the market he could still end up signing here again.

Here's the scenarios that could take place that cause this to be a mistake:
1) Colborne walks and repeats his production, which is more than his replacement
2) Colborne walks and improves upon his production
3) Colborne walks and declines in production but has a better production than his replacement.
Looking at free agency, there's maybe 2 RWs in Colbornes age bracket (not post-apex) and both of which would receive more salary in the free market than Colborne's arbitration award

At 4 days away, Colborne and his agent are going to explore all avenues. Now Flames don't even a qualifying offer reward if he signs elsewhere.
If there was no benefit to the RFA status (with arbitration rights), then why have it?

So I presume you are in strong favour of bringing back Jiri Hudler to maintain the status quo?

Show me an equal free agent expected to sign for 3-4 million for one year? Even if Colborne sucks, being locked in for only 1 year is A GOOD THING! No good free agent accepts one year deals.

Hudler declined? Colborne improved. I'm also in favour of bringing back Monahan and Gaudreau, does that mean it's maintaining status quo?

Honestly, I tend to agree. He was sooooo frustrating to watch for the first 3/4 of last season and I wanted him gone in the worst way. I'd love it if he figured it all out and comes back playing like he finished the season from now on but I'd bet he's the same soft player the majority of the time again and if so, let him walk for all I care.

Hudler had more points last year than Colborne did...as he did the four seasons prior.

If Colborne costs us $4 mil, I'd way rather spend another $2 and get someone that actually uses his size to his advantage, even if it's for more years. Team needs players with size and when they don't use their size properly then there's no point to having it.

Hudler wouldn't be reviving arbitration money?
Colborne produced well for his minutes and salary. Apples and Oranges

Fine. Show me a RWer who plays big at 6 million.

It's a cap league. Your players should be great (Monahan, Giordano), fill a purpose such as elite defensive play (Backlund, Frolik), be an NHL ready prospect with potential (Shinkaruk, Wotherspoon), or be dirt cheap (Jokipakka, Chiasson).
Every so often you need to overpay for depth players. But the Flames are all filled up with Bouma, Raymond, Engelland, Wideman, Smid, Stajan, Bollig, etc.
Better to see what you have in Chiasson, Ferland, Tkachuk, Shinkaruk, Prybl, or one of the guys you have already overpaid for.
That isn't a slight against Colborne. But if you can't sign him to a budget contract with appropriate term you need to move on.
As for him being a 44 point player, if the Flames truly believed that he would be qualified. If Colborne's camp truly believed that they would be running to free agency. Good on Treliving from learning from the Bouma contract and avoiding overpaying for one season of production.

He's not a RW though, he's supposed to be a C, so without looking too deeply into it I'd rather pick up Lucic, Backes, Brouwer, Okposo and I'm sure there's plenty of other players who use their size better.

If someone wants to sign Colbourne to 3.5 or even 3 million plus long term. Have fun. No different that Russel. Shrewd cap management is a neccessity for a chance at a championship team.
Management is projecting future contracts within different scenarios like if the salary cap drops next year or the year after.
It's a calculated risk to let Colbourne potentially walk, but it's a far greater risk to potentially overpay him.

Especially since it's gonna be really damn hard to get rid of our current overpaid & bloated contracts.

I'd rather go out and spend 4.5-5.5 on Boedkker than spend more than 3 on Colborne.

Not really, they're pretty much all expiring this year. That being said we need to avoid those crap contracts going forward.
