It has to be either Calgary or San Jose for him. He has worked his way through the Pacific Division, and those are the only two teams left.

It's possible if the Flames can't sign the guys they want in free agency they can revisit Ortio but it's looking like my contact was right months ago in that the team truly was going clean slate at the position.

A qualifier would have had to be a 1-way deal though. It could be as simple as they want him back but only if he is waiver eligible. I doubt he has a whole lot of options elsewhere in the NHL so its possible he is back to battle for the backup spot but only on a 2 way deal if he doesnt cut it,

Even with a 2 way deal i think because of his age and games played he would have to pass through waivers. Could be wrong. IMO its all about signing him for dirt cheap or they would rather go with a more established back-up for more money. Ball is in Ortio's court.

If that's truly the case, would they not have let go of Jordan Sigalet and Scott Gouthro?

I think if they can't find anyone else, they'll sign Ortio probably to a two way contract because they've suddenly become cheap.

My guess is they landed Hutton in the courting period. Solid tandem. Ortio may walk even with negotiations ongoing. Wouldn't shock me.
EDIT: I am completely relying on Freidmans crystal ball from the day before the draft. He called Elliott for #35 and then called Hutton as the back up.

I don't think 1 way or 2 way deals have any bearing on waiver eligibility, rather they just have different pay grades when playing in the AHL. 1 way gets full NHL money and 2 way has, for example, 1 mil in the NHL 100k AHL.

yes thats what i mean....no way they want to pay a guy 700K to play in Stockton so they want a 2 way deal with him if they have to send him down.
If he was qualified now it would have to be a one way because thats what he is coming off of.

All I can get

The Brian Elliot pick-up was a really deft move by Treliving in that it gives the team a solid veteran at manageable cost.
Reminds me of the some of the Flames/Blues - Cliff Fletcher/Ron Caron deals in which Flames yore is cast.
Treliving is still looking for a deal to acquire an Elliot understudy.

I'd go with Montoya.

Al Montoya looked great this year, is there any indication that he won't go back to Florida? Seems like a pretty good fit for him there as the undisputed #2.

I think part of this depends on how many games one can expect Elliott to start?
10 goalies started 60+ games last year. 20 started 50+.
What/who the Flames need from the backup position depends a lot on Elliott's start number.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable penciling Ortio for 32 starts just yet.

Chad Johnson makes a lot of sense I guess.
They're going to want a guy who can take the reigns if Elliot gets hurt, and can start 30~ games as a back up if he doesn't. Johnson has done that 2 of the last 3 seasons and started 19 games in the other season.
He also has ties to Calgary, and he has ties to Treliving having spent 2012/13 season in the Yotes organization.

Hutton or Enroth would be good choices. Hopefully the Ramo experiment is over...

Ramo last season started 37 games, went 17-18-1 2.63 .909
Ortio for his career has started 34 games, went 15-15-5 2.66 .901
I guess whether one thinks Ortio is backup capable depends on whether one thinks his career is on a downward trajectory, or whether he's still developing his potential.
I'll take a .500 back-up goalie for 32 or so starts for a contract well under $1M.

That'd be a lot of money tied up in a backup goalie. I'd pass of Reimer unless he takes less then 3 million to be a backup.
