One thing to consider is that the Blackhawks got 2 2nd round picks for Shaw and I HIGHLY doubt we could get anything close to that for Colborne. So I don't think Shaw is really a comparable player.

Andrew Shaw got the same term and two-thirds of the money as Filip Forsberg.

What the heck, Bergevin?

Enjoy that anchor stupid Habs.

Now imagine the Caps sign Lars Eller to a similar contract to this. That would be hilarious. Like 2 stupid GMs trying to out suck each other.

Pfft, we could send him to Vancouver for Demko, a 2nd and a 4th. Ol' Dim Jim's got us covered

This guy's like a smaller, meaner, Stanley cup winning Joe Colborne.

$1.5 million too much per year and 3 years too long. The team will probably start to regret this deal after about 20 games into the season. A slightly better version of Lance Bouma.

Let's go over this again.

Calgary passed at one year and the very worst what Andrew Shaw will make every year for 6 years.

Calgary could have had Colborne for one year and they still passed on him. What does that tell you about his value?
Clearly this is a difficult concept for you. Being comparable for contracts don't mean the players have the same value to different teams (Montreal obviously values Shaw more because of their severe desperation for what he brings); it means that their agents will use that contract as a comparable, it is also a comparable if Colborne was going to arbitration. Calgary did not "pass" on Colborne, they chose to avoid arbitration because they feel he could receive an award they aren't comfortable paying. Which actually tells you alot about how comparable these contracts could be if it went to arbitration.

It kinda sucks for them because they can't just hire the best GM available. They have to hire someone who speaks French or the media will burn down the city of Montreal.

Well you just need one stupid team to pay a ridiculous price like this. I doubt you'd get that either, but I'd also have doubted anyone would pay or trade for Shaw like this.

Andrew Shaw breakdown
2016 - $5.5M ($2.5M SB)
2017 - $5M ($2M SB)
2018 - $4M
2019 - $3.25M ($1M SB)
2020 - $2.75M
2021 - $2.9M ($1M SB)
Well on the bright side, it won't be an awful contract to buy-out.

Many Chi fans, of course, are sad to see Shaw let go, but there is recognition that we wouldn't have been able to fit him in for much more than Kruger signed for. The other feeling among 'Hawk fans, is that Shaw's reckless style and willingness to take a beating in the crease, along with his smallish size, will be detrimental to his ability to stay healthy...a six year deal seems a bit of a gamble.
