I think there are plenty of issues to fix before Stajan becomes an issue. Karl nailed it really, unless someone is willing to take his contract in full. Let's face it, we have a better chance of getting 1st round pick for Wideman. If Vegas doesn't take him, you consider buying him out next summer.

btimbit - would Columbus take him plus, say, a 5th for Hartnell?

I like it. If Elliott has a great year we could really push a few teams!

Bouma Stajan Hathaway
Jooris, Bollig
Giordano Brodie
Jokipakka Hamilton
Engellend Nakladal
Seiloff
Elliott

First line gets the big winger it needs
Second line is solid veteran line that can score and take a defensive zone faceoff and turn it up the ice
Third line gets sheltered icetime in positions where they will succeed and build confidence.
Fourth line platoons our PK and role players
Seiloff earns the 7th dman role out of camp.
Colborne, Wideman (retained salary), and Porier/klimchuk/jankowski go for Hartnell.

You don't have to sent anyone for Hartnell, Blue Jackets are tight agianst the cap, they will be looking to dump some salary, so they can sign Seth Jones.

Gaudreau (7M)-Monahan (6.5M)-Foligno (5.5M)
Second tier UFA (3.5)-Backlund (3.6)-Frolik (4.3)
Tkachuk (0.9)-Bennett (0.9)-Shinkaruk (0.9)
Bouma(2.2)-Stajan (3.1)-Ferland (0.8)
Bollig (1.3), Jooris (1.0)
Raymond (2.2)
Hamilton (5.8)-Brodie (4.7)
Giordano (6.8)-Engelland (2.9)
Jokipakka (0.9)-Nakladal (1.0)
Wotherspoon (0.9)
Smid-LTIR
Elliot (2.5)
Ortio (0.8)
Colborne++ for Foligno.
Columbus has about 4M left with their team pretty much set, except they need to sign Seth Jones. If they can't find suitable trades for some of their other contracts, Colborne (who scored 44 points), looks like a decent downgrade for Foligno (who scored 37 points).
Wideman either traded with salary retained and assets, or bought out.

Predict the 2016/2017 Flames Starting Lineup
[QUOTE=Roof-Daddy;5811112]Will be nice when they get Johnny, Mony and Colborne's contracts done so the picture becomes clearer, but this is roughly what it looks like at the moment if Tkatchuk and Shinkaruk can force their way onto the roster.
1. Gaudreau (6,750,000) - Monahan (6,750,000) - Shinkaruk (863,333)
2. Colborne (2,800,000) - Backlund (3,575,000) - M. Frolik (4,300,000)
3. Tkatchuk (925,000) - S. Bennett (925,000) - M. Ferland (825,000)
4. L. Bouma (2,200,000) - M Stajan (3,125,000) - J Jooris (1,000,000)
Extra - Bollig (1,250,000) - Hathaway (619,000)
In Limbo - Raymond (3,150,000)
1. Giordano (6,750,000) - Hamilton (5,750,000)
2. TJ Brodie (4,650,400) - Wideman (5,250,000)
3. Jokipakka (900,000) - Engelland (2,916,667)
Extra - Wotherspoon (900,000)
In Limbo - Smid (3,500,000)
1. Elliot (2,500,000)
2. Ortio (800,000)
Total against cap - $73,045,400 [\QUOTE]
This list of names is pretty much exactly what I'm thinking it'll look like. I'd move some names around (Colborne and Bennett up, Shinkaruk and Backlund down) but I think this is going to be pretty much the group we go into the season with.
Maybe a Pribyl somewhere after an injury? Perhaps a depth signing of some kind? But that group looks like one that can and should compete for a non-wildcard playoff spot.

I still feel the flames move out one or more of:
Wideman
Stajan
Raymond
Bouma
Jooris
Bollig
Engelland (unlikely given link with new coach)
I also think flames fans should assume tkatchuk goes to London this year. He has to have a great camp and do enough to earn a spot, even then I think sending him down for another year would be the best for the player.
I wouldn't mind bringing in a tier 2 option for the rw gaps. Vrbata, hudler, vanek, Hartnell, type guys as a short term stopgap but also guys hungry to rejuvenate their place in the league.

The Flames have to make one d-man who has played 40/70 games available for the draft that is under contract for 2017-18
The only possibilities to fill this spot with the current expected line up is Hamilton, Brodie Gio and Jokipakka. Wideman, Engelland, Smid will not have contracts... Nadakal is exempt under the less than 2 years.
What other D-man will play 40 games for the Flames this year??
The Flames are set to lose a d-man in the expansion draft.

yeah sadly I think we'll lose Jokipakka. Unless Stajan has a great season and LV needs his cap hit, but I doubt it.

We are spending too much on bottom pairings and 4th line players. That needs to be addressed or we are hooped against the cap.

In my opinion the Flames will lose a forward.
Teams that will potentially lose a D better then Kevin/Have NMC (possible these teams protect 8 skaters)
Ana - Despres/Manson/Lindholm/Fowler/Vatanen/Bieksa
Win - Buff/Enstrom/Myers/Trouba
Stl - Pietrangelo/Boumeester/Gunnarsson/Shattenkirk* if re-signed
Nas - Weber/Josi/Ekholm/Ellis
Min - Suter/Brodin/Scandella/Spurgeon/Dumba
Chi - Keith/Seabrook/Hjalmarsson/Van Reimsdyk
Was - Niskanen/Alzner/Carlson/Oprik
NYR - Stall/Girardi/McDonagh/Klein
NYI - Boychuk/Hamonic/Leddy/Hickey
CBJ - Tytuin/Johnson/Savard/Murray/Jones
TB - Hedman/Stralman/Garrison/Coburn
Ott - Karlsson/Phaneuf/Ceci/Methot
Det - Green/Kronwall/Ericsson/DeKeyser
Buff - Risto/Kulikov/Gorges/Bogosian
Thats about half the league they can get their D from and have a really good D core. Of course some of those teams might expose a better forward option. But I think Vegas would be better served to get their D from this list.

If you are Vegas do you pick Jokipakka as your #9 D-man or Stajan as your # 14 forward?

It's going to be hilarious when an expansion team has a defense that is twice as good as the Oilers.

Why is Stajan the only option upfront?
Lets say Flames protect Gaudreau/Monahan/Bennett/Backlund/Frolik/Colborne.
That leaves Ferland, Stajan, Bouma, Shinkaruk, most of AHL guys and only one spot. They can easily go with the a guy like Poirier or Klimchuk or Agostino etc for development.
The point is there are better options then Stajan on Flames and Jokipakka across the league. The Flames luckily, will not be hurt by this expansion.

After this next season most of the bad contracts that overpay for depth players or just plain terrible players are finished luckily.
Wideman, Raymond, Smid, Bollig and Engelland all off the books.
Will just be Bouma and Stajan left and both of those guys I expect will improve. I think Stajan gets a better role with the new coach and if Bouma can stay healthy his $2.2 million cap hit is not even close to being an albatross.
Of course, this is assuming BT doesn't go out and add any bad contracts in free agency this summer.
