When we had two of the worst goalies in the league. Neither were top 30, it was a shooting gallery and the other teams had no respect for them.

Yeah, our goaltending was a joke. I can agree with that.
Team wasn't though.

At the end of the day I love this trade for two reasons
One we get a very good goalie and fill one of our major holes
Two the looks on faces of Rutherford and Yzerman when they realized that they didn't have Treliving over some kind of imaginary barrel and they both now have a significant problem because one of them got greedy and now has a major roster problem, and the other one is looking a cap problem in the face.

“Just having the GM and the coaching staff show interest in me, it makes me feel great. It makes you want to get to Calgary right away.”
Quote:
" woke up at, like, 3 a.m. and saw my phone going off,” Elliott said Saturday. “I didn’t get much sleep after that. It’s a little bit crazy to be on vacation, but it’s something that happens in the NHL. I’m definitely excited about it.”
"Between both parties, we realized it was probably best to try and find a home for me somewhere else,” Elliott said. “I wanted to have that opportunity, just based on how the past couple years have gone. (Allen) is a really good goaltender and is a good friend of mind. I don’t want to go out with bad blood.
“I respect St. Louis, the city and the organization. I think they respected me as well. I think they wanted to give me an opportunity and I worked hard for it, but they weren’t able to give it to me.”
|
Quote:
“I just want to try and create a culture in the dressing room that’s a winning atmosphere,” he said. “Sometimes with younger teams, that gets lost a little bit. You can’t just throw your stick on the ice, go out and play, and try to win a game. When every detail counts and guys are accountable for their actions, everybody can count on each other and get things done. That’s what I’m looking forward to being a part of and trying to cultivate that winning attitude.
“I want to make Calgary one of the toughest places to play.”
|
Quote:
"Going back to his years in college (at the University of Wisconsin, 2003-07), this is a guy that doesn’t allow bad goals,” said Brian Burke, the Flames’ president of hockey operations.
“He’s a battler. This is a guy that gives second-effort games. He’s a professional.
“He’s approached the goaltending position professionally.”
"He’s had to fight for the net … because management has always felt there’s a goaltender there that’s his equal,” said Burke. “That’s certainly not the situation with us.”
|
Quote:
Re-upping him costs the Flames the aforementioned third-round pick (in 2018) and, of course, a plumped-up wage.
“It’s helpful, but it wasn’t the deciding factor,” Burke said of Elliott’s modest ticket. “The deciding factor was we wanted the goaltender … we haven’t ruled out extending him.”

I wonder if they talk extension this off season or wait and see how it works out for the first few months of the season...
The appealing idea around Elliot seems to be he hopefully won't be commanding the max term like Bishop was rumoured to be looking for.

i've come up with another scheme. this is one of the more ludicrous ones, don't take it seriously
say elliott is awesome next year, and both parties want to extend him. he's already 31, and he will be 32 when his contract expires. what if Brad could get him to sign an 8 year deal, well under market value, with the understanding that he retires whenever he starts stinking. pretty blatant cap circumvention yes, but both parties would get what they want. front load the crap out of the contract so that by the time Elliot is 36 and probably washed up he's earned most of the money.
something like 8 years, with a structure like 6,6,6,4.5,3,3,3,3
to elliott and the flames, it's like he signed a 4 year 22.5 million deal so 5.5 mil/year
to the cap, it's like he signed a 8 year 34.5 million deal, so only 4.25 mil/year or so.
saves some cap, has some risk, probably would result in forfeiture of some draft picks. seems interesting though.
edit: as dying4acup points out, there would be recapture penalties, so this is just a silly idea that wouldn't help the flames in any way

2 year extension, $4 Million per year
Next year will be a terrible market for #1 goalies looking to score big. Already not enough spots.
$4 Million is fair - the most he's ever earned per season by more than $1 Million. Plus if he knocks it out of the park then he can re-up again.
The key is to get the extension done this summer so it's fair for both sides.

I think this leaves the flames with recapture penalties. Not to mention that Elliot could show up to camp to collect a pay check. Not a good idea.

Goaltending was a joke and Bob's system and lack of adjustment held the roster in front of them back.
Opposing coaches only had to do a little scouting to solve us. That coupled with the circus between the pipes and it was pretty embarrassing/frustrating given the fall from grace the year previous.

Alpaca, Nak City (fingers crossed), The Spoon and hell even Sieloff and his toughness can help shore up that third pairing.
Then Andersson, Hickey, Kulak, Culkin waiting in the ranks. One could make a leap. I really don't think we need to acquire anyone when it comes to 5/6 d-men. We have the organizational depth.

True. I believe the only real out or exploitation of the salary cap in a situation like this is if they determine that when Elliott is no longer playing up to snuff, they declare that he is injured, thus put on the IR & his salary space is available once the season starts.
Being that goaltenders are prone to degenerating hips, I have read that this is why the Panthers could not be concerned about Luongo's cap hit or recapture.
He can't play because he sucks & he sucks because he is "injured".
However Burke would never go for this sort of shady shenanigans.

I don't see the need to acquire another experienced goalie. The whole reason things soured for Elliot in St. Louis is because he didn't want to play in a tandem. He felt he had proved he can be a starter. And I think he has proved that. So let him run with the ball.

Agreed. Sign Ortio to his qualifying offer and have two cheap goalies, both with something to prove this year.
