Yeah all the big names had me freaking out that teams were going to take a pound of flesh out of CGY in their quest to get a legit #1. Really really happy Elliott is coming in at the cost and cap hit he is going to.
He may not have the stability of a good 60 + start guy but you're going to be hard pressed finding another goalie at that cost with those kind of stats. And he is in his prime, I say this as I believe most goalies are at their peak from 28-35.

2 years, 2 straight home runs. That Bennett year was pretty good, too. Oh and Monahan's before that. It's been a good rebuild pretty much.
It truly sucked worrying that goaltending alone had a good chance to sink our chances every night. Not having to do that next season will be hella nice..

Happy to get Elliot but let's not forget that he's been playing behind one of the top defence cores in the league. He's a vast improvement but let's keep expectations reasonable.

Meh, if anything it'll help out D corps. And this isn't Hartleys super spread out run and gun system he'll be operating in either. Even if he ends up being a 20th ranked goalie in the league I think the Flames have the firepower to push hard for the division.

I don't recall Elliot's puck playing skills? Having a goalie who is comfortable in helping transition up the ice is huge.

I also think this was the right move. Acquisition cost, cap hit and contract length are all sweet.
And while I would discuss extension with him now to get an idea of what he wants there is no way I would give him a contract before Christmas. Actually I'd wait until just before the trade deadline. The goaltending market continues to be fluid and remains a buyers market and will stay that way through expansion. Let's not be in a rush to give up this flexibility we just gained.
See how Elliott does. See how Ortio does (I'd give him the backup job but on a fairly short leash). See how Gillies does (and find out for sure if he has to be protected or not). Heck even the play of Rittich, McDonald and Schneider can be a factor. There's gonna be a lot of goalie movement over the next 12-18 months and we should stay flexible. Maybe we still get Bishop or MAF or Bernier or Reimer or whomever else shakes loose, just one year later.
I'd like to take a late round flyer tomorrow on another goalie too. Vehvilainen, Werner or maybe McBride. One more in the system would be useful I think

Have to think an extension for Elliot will be coming July 1st. I wonder what he will sign for? His stats are quite impressive. The only thing stopping him getting $6 million per is the amount of games average he plays in a season. IMO i don't think the flames gave up a 35th pick just to have him for one year.
I'm going to say $5 million per on a 2 year extension.

If Rob Volkman is giving Elliot the nod, then I really like this deal.

Like someone posted earlier I'm glad he is a western conference goalie. He knows the shooters.

Was speculation #Flames would acquire first player taken in 2003 #NHLDraft. Instead, they trade for second-to-last player taken in '03...

I kind of don't get this trade, next year teams like be looking to unload goalies because of the expansion draft, why not wait till next year?

Loved what Friedman said about Elliott on the Fan: when Elliott heard about the possibility of the Flames, really wanted to go. A huge chip on his shoulder, out to prove he's a #1.
I really, really like this move.

This will be a really good hockey team. Why waste it with another year of terrible goaltending?
And I am not sure Tre is done just yet

Because the Flames need a goalie now. They may not be cup contenders right now but your goal every year should be to atleast make the playoffs.

Thing is, we can still go after a goalie next year should Elliott not work out, such is the flexibility this deal provides.
All star, great stats, low acquisition, low cap hit, doesn't force buyouts, allows further additions if required. It really is the smartest deal out there.
