From a marketing standpoint, I hope they avoid gambling references. It could be perceived as sending the wrong message and end up being a marketing nightmare. The NHL wants to be known as family friendly and a gambling reference could undermine that message (I have no personal problems with gambling, this is just my opinion as a Marketer). I've always liked tough animals used to name a team, but that has not been a big trend in the NHL.

What kind of vicious desert animals/reptiles/insects could they use?
Scorpions? Too many syllables.
Rattlers? I don't mind this.

I would imagine the Black Aces are in the mix too.
I can't imagine a name that isn't gambling related for the team.

Honestly, I don't think it's necessary to have a regional animal/reptile/insect. Take a look at the Penguins (and many other animal named teams). That's not exactly a local animal. But it works for their organization. I think before choosing your team name, you want to identify the type of culture you are developing. Then choose a name that exemplafies those values. The name is your ambassador to the organization. It's the first thing people experience. People subconsciously make association and decisions when they first hear a name. Especially children. The same can be applied to the logo. Defining your culture and using the name to exemplify the values you want to project goes a long way. Okay, I'll stop nerding out over Marketing now...

I dunno, I think "Scorpions" would be the winner of a poll to name the team for sure.
Scorpions always succeed with polls.

I dont know, theres some serious competition on that score from Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver. After an expansion draft they could conceivably be better than all 3 of those teams.

Perhaps a No Good ranking methodology is in order.

I agree with 1-4. After that, apathy sets in.
