I'd take Clarkson (50% retained) + 3rd overall for the 35th pick. That's about the only scenario I could stomach where he's involved.

They would for sure play him. Columbus played him, he was just hurt most of the season.

From what I've read, the signing bonuses on his contract would make the buyout almost pointless. Someone can correct me on this.

Reimer is a UFA with no acquisition cost other than his contract, and the Flames are the only team likely in the market for a goalie who could guarantee him the starter's role this season.

This is correct. You can buy him out, but would still owe him his 20M in signing bonuses.

There is very little cap benefit in buying out Clarkson, the way it is structured.

Also his contract is mostly paid out in signing bonuses which need to be paid out regardless, so the owners save little actual $ too.

Clarkson's contract is buy out proof.

Clarkson Buy Out

You gain nothing by buying him out.

Clarkson currently has a cap hit of $5.25 remaining for 4 years. If we bought him out, we'd still be dealing with the following cap hits instead of $5.25M:

2016-17 $3.75 ... savings of $1.5M
2017-18 $3.75 ... savings of $1.5M
2018-19 $4.75 ... savings of $0.5M
2019-20 $4.75 ... savings of $0.5M
2020-21 $0.5M ... savings of -$0.5M
2021-22 $0.5M ... savings of -$0.5M
2022-23 $0.5M ... savings of -$0.5M
2023-24 $0.5M ... savings of -$0.5M

So a buyout would save $2M total over 8 years instead of his actual 4 years remaining.

Is it possible that if the Flames took on Clarkson, they could flip him to a team that needs to get to the cap floor while retaining salary? So the Flames pay Clarkson but clear the cap space. Could work well for a budget team like the Coyotes.

Can't do that. If you retain salary, it's on your cap.

FWIW Dreger on TSN says other GMs have told him that if Kekalainen moves #3 he wants to attach a bad contract like Hartnell or Clarkson.

I would take on the Clarkson contract if necessary, and play him....

Hartnell is the only contract that could work out. That Clarkson contract is the worst in the entire league.

I am very OK with taking Hartnell with the third overall.

Clarkson? Just say no, Brad.

Which Toronto GM signed him to that?

I'd be fine with Hartnell, but a big no to Clarkson.

Clarkson's contract is probably the worst in the history of this league.
