Did not want Fredrik Andersen because I am leery of all Duck goalies due to the quality of their defense, just like I wouldn't want Crawford for the same reason (although I think Crawford is a better goalie than Andersen).
Glad we weren't the one paying that price.

Not a bad move on its own, but the term and dollar figure are really strange. Seems like decent gamble on a goalie with potential followed by a potentially crippling contract before he's proven anything for your team.
It will be interesting to follow, as publicly available advanced metrics show Andersen as average to slightly above average, while on the other hand the Maple Leafs have invested a lot into their analytics department and scooped up some really smart individuals. Perhaps their research has found something no one in the public domain has, or perhaps they are pulling a Jay Feaster by thinking they are smarter than everyone else only to have it backfire. Especially difficult with a goaltender - which why I'm stunned by the contract itself.

Fair deal for both. Toronto improved their Goalie situation, ANA picked up a nice assortment of draft picks.

Take from the author of the Hockey Abstract series - some of you may be familiar with him from his radio appearances. This is ranks of the 53 goalies with 50 or more starts:
Rob Vollman @robvollmanNHL
That's a lot of $ for Andersen. Over 3 yrs, ranks:
13th by Quality Start Pct%
23rd by SV%
25th by Adj SV%
26th by home plate SV%
26th by xGS
Andersen's value inflated by goal support of 3.11 (3rd in NHL), and facing especially soft opponents.
I used to study the avg shooting pct% of teams goalies assigned to face. Only one goalie was facing noticeably easier opponents: Andersen.

Glad to see Andersson off the market and for a pretty minimal acquisition cost. That should bode well for the Flames as they try to work a deal for a goaltender. Have to think that they are now in the range of a 2nd to two late seconds for a tender now. Should be an interesting 96 hours.

Good to see the Sportsnet not going overboard on this signing....
Oh wait, 2 videos on their youtube channel, one titled "Leafs go after a star goalie" and the other was "Does Andersen become a magnet for Stamkos?"
Dear me.

TSN is just as bad. The Flames announcing a new head coach wasn't even a front page story at their site on Friday while plenty of Leafs and Blue Jays stories were peppered all over.

They are pandering to their market. Statistically they have more Leaf followers than any other teams fans do. Maybe 50000 viewers who care about the Flames getting a new coach compared to the hundreds of thousands of Leaf fans watching and I'm sure you can see why.

Agreed but doesn't mean we have to like or accept being treated as tier two fans.

1oo% agree that Sportsnet (and TSN) should treat their local markets with specific content. They have regional channels and could make web content geographically specific per IP could they not?

Help, save, whatever.

Not sure how I feel about this trade. When I look at Andersen's numbers they don't look that impressive and he is always a tandem player except for one year and that was when his numbers dropped a lot. I don't see why the Leafs had to make this trade now. And I don't see how he merits a 5 year contract. He is almost the same age as reimer who has played a lot more and put up better numbers behind a much worse team.
I hope I'm wrong but I think this trade will be a mistake.

Yeah, but Reimer isn't really an option for the Leafs. That bridge has already burned.

I think we'll end up alright here but this was the best goalie in the sweepstakes.

No. Depending upon who is included in the "sweepstakes" I think Andersen is third or fourth at best.

What is your priority ranking?
Admittedly, I've got no clue and I'm going on accounts of guys I've talked to who played against Andersen in Europe (I don't even know the league!).

A combination of skill and acquisition cost. I place Bishop well ahead, but his acquisition cost is also higher. I think both Fleury and Reimer are better goalies for a lower cost. If Varlomov is in the same mix I would also set him higher and he can probably be acquired for close to the same, but his contract is a little more expensive.

yeah the Andersen trade has been interesting in that you have a lot of the stats blogger guys out of Toronto and Leaf fans. When a guy with brutal underlying numbers gets dealt they tend to jump in and laugh at the acquiring team.
With this deal they've had to find hobbies outside for 24 hours.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. I would have been good with the Flames securing Andersen for two of their 2nd round picks but the Leafs deal was a little rich for my tastes as Andersrn to me is like a bigger Ramo that at times is very solid and at others needs to be spelled by the backup or 1B goaltender. Throw in middling advanced stats and the fact that he played behind an air tight defense and everything points to a middle of the road, average starting goaltender which isn't bad but guys like this can be had for less than a 1st and 2nd round pick.
I don't see him as being better than Reimer who can be signed without giving up assets.
