Scott Hartnell has a NMC and would need to be protected for the expansion draft. One thing to consider. At half salary retained though, I think it may be worth the hit.

I would give it 100% chance the the flames go into Friday still having the #6 pick. If it gets traded it will definitely be while Columbus is on the clock.

6th + 2nd round pick + Backlund for 3rd + Hartnell at 1/2 retained I could honestly see working.

while Backlund is great and signed for 2 more years, he will likely be too expensive to hold on to by the time Calgary is competitive.

I think it happens on Friday(if it happens at all), I am thinking the Blue Jackets will take their time.

I'd happily take #3 and Hartnell if it didn't cripple our cap.

Buyout Wideman to make it work?

If any deal were to happen for #3, it would definitely be Friday, more so during the draft itself. Teams will start getting antsy and will offer more and more as the time comes near.

If Hartnell needs to be protected, then how does the Flames protected list look like?

It would suck to lose Backlund but Stajan can play that 3rd line role and give Janko a year in AHL.

I doubt your GM is unique in this regard. I think you can assume most GM's operate this way.

What is this? A chart for ants?

Assuming Backlund is part of the trade

Michael Frolik
Sean Monahan
Johnny Gaudreau
Sam Bennett
Scott Hartnell
Micheal Ferland (or insert other player)
Joe Colborne (or insert other player)

Mark Giordano
Dougie Hamilton
TJ Brodie

Jon Gillies

Calgary will be just fine, as long as the expansion draft happens next year. The biggest worry has always been Wideman's case.

Assuming they go with 7F/3D, they would still be in good shape: Johnny, Monahan, Bennett, Frolik, Backlund, and Hartnell make 6 forwards to be protected. That would leave one more spot for someone to step up this season, whether it's Bouma, Ferland, Colborne or someone else.

Glad this is over soon. Hurts my head.
How much does one value Laine over Puljujarvi?
What does Winnipeg need to drop from 2 to 3?
Snag 3 from CBJ and flip picks with the Jets?

Shoot me

I agree and like him but you lose him for a middling prospect or 2nd rounder at the trade deadline in 2018.

Monetize him now as there will be no room to pay him $5.0 to $5.75 million per year on an extension to play 3rd line minutes.

For the people that see him as our 2nd line center for the next 2 to 6 years, do you move Bennett for a Nichuskin plus, or Bennett for 3rd Overall???

I like Bennett's ceiling, current cost & style of play, IMO you roll the dice that he is at least our 2nd line center in 2 years. If you are wrong at that point you still have a fabulous RW prospect in Pull and RV.

Backlund would have great value around the league, produces well with lower minutes/raw line mates and a very responsible two way player.

Calgary will soon be in a tough position where they need to make deals like Chicago and give up guys like Saad for nothing. Bennett will be up for a new contract extension a year before Backlund is up for one. Backlund will request 4.5-5 million. Bennett will likely be 5-7 million depending on his progress. Monahan will likely be looking at 6.5 million or so.

That is too much. Backlund will not be a Flames 3 years from now, simple economic reality.
