Burke used McCabe who was an NHL dman at the time to get the 4th overall pick from Chicago and their GM Bob Murray. Less than a year later Burke hired Murray in Vancouver and he rode Burke's coat tails for a number of years.
But McCabe was never traded for Sedin. And McCabe was nothing special at the time.

It was essentially McCabe plus 2 third round picks that year, plus Vancouver 1st pick the following year for 1st overall

If Lance Bouma is, by some miracle, the only key player asset you move to draft Puljujarvi you buy him the damn limousine needed to chauffeur him to the airport.
He's a heart and soul guy no doubt. But you win with talent, not overpaid 3rd liners.

Noting that a team like Columbus or Winnipeg would be asking for the moon does not equate to underappreciating Brodie.
People need to realize that the cost of moves like this - especially for these three players - is very likely going to be huge. And since we all know how highly the Flames rate Brodie, the argument really being made here is that the odds of the Flames moving up into the top three is exceedingly small.

I think you're right. Columbus would want the moon.
There seems to be a large gap between players like Bennett, Hamilton, and Brodie, then assets like Backlund, the 2nds, Kylington, etc. If a deal gets done, I'm guessing it'll have to be closer to the Bennett side of things in terms of value (in addition to the 6th overall).
Brad Treliving isn't crazy enough to trade away Bennett or Brodie.
IMO, the only things with a lot of value that might be traded are the 2017 first rounder and Hamilton. Hamilton would still be too much IMO.
What if they offered the 6th and the 2017 first for the 3rd overall? Brad could then acquire the best goalie available to lower the value of our 2017 pick. They could also trade some of the seconds for someone else's 2017 first.

On one hand, trading up to get Puljujarvi would be great, adding a stud forward will go really far towards making this team a cup contender. On the other hand, if we don't trade up, we won't have to see "Pull-an-RV" posted ever again. Tough choice here.

The fact that people are actually questioning giving up Bouma to move up 3 spots (if that's all it takes, and it won't) scares me. There are 400 players in the league at or better than Bouma's level.

I think trying to get to 4 if they can't get straight to 3 is still to get to 3. So if Columbus wants Brown and wants to be sure they get their guy instead of risk Vancouver grabbing him and trading with the Flames for #6 they would want the Flames to move up to 4 first and then trade 3 for 4 plus whatever else it would cost. I can't see the Flames trading up to 4 for any other reason. The difference between the players ranked 4 and on is not worth giving the assets to the Oilers for.

Yeah, I like Bouma, but if you can improve by dealing him (whether or not he is a piece in moving up in the draft), then you just continue on with Ferland and/or Hathaway. Especially since Lance's contract is one he is not likely to outperform this year either.

He was the first to call Jokinen back to the Flames and also called the Gulutzan hiring so maybe he has a couple sources out there that are legit

Initially I was against giving up our first and three seconds to get up to #3 but if Puljujarvi(spelling?) is that highly rated than I guess that's a move you make. But there is no chance I'd ever consider giving up Brodie, Hamilton, Bennett or Monahan to get to 3. That's just lunancy.

Actually, Bouma was brought up (along with a 2nd) to move up 2 spots.
And I'll say it again, the difference between the 4th and the 6th picks is marginal (and quite possibly ends up as the same player). It isn't an NHLer plus a 2nd round pick .
The jump to #3 is definitely more significant, and a different conversation. But talking about Bouma + to move up 2 spots to 4 was silly.

Is anyone actually questioning it? I see a lot of discussion about Bouma's value, but has anyone actually equated that to a top three pick?

I think you have to pay a team to take Bouma. Overpaid and injury prone.
Not sure how he could help Flames move up. Down, maybe.

I'm really confused...
I went back a few pages to find out how the Bouma discussion came about...
3 pages of discussing Brodie, some good reads.. some not so much..
Then post #223 from Tinordi starts talking about Lance Bouma being an add and it's like there's a rumour floating around, but I can't find where the Bouma convo came from..
Someone help me out?

That proposal isn't that far off the crazy HF boards proposals. Bouma is a bad contract, which is a minus in most equations.
He's not the worst contract, but he hardly represents an enticement to someone who has the 4th OA. Also, EDM has to win that trade as the risk of supplying CGY with a hot prospect is too high.
I'd rather see CGY blow its wad on #3. That is exactly what the team needs.

I'm with you... I HIGHLY doubt that pick is moved, though if it does it would be done during the draft
