Have you been downtown lately? So many shrunken suit dudes strutting about.
Suits look absolutely ridiculous these days, do most guys who wear business attire not realize how bad it's become with the constant evolution to skinniness? It's downright awful, and I think we'll see a change in the next few years.
Like every style out there it'll keep going further and further to an extreme and then all of a sudden old will become new again. The 80's/early 90's were too far the other way, imo. But the late 90's/early 2000's were a nice middle zone for suit fitting.
You're hilariously underestimating how ingrained Maclean is in the Canadian hockey world. It's not just the boomers that love him. The amount of whining I've heard about Strombo from my 20 and 30 year old friends is crazy. All the while singing the praises of Maclean.
The guy is an institution in this country, and it's certainly not just the boomers who are bringing him back.
Sportsnet showed little-known to no regard for the rich history that was HNIC in CBC. They could desperately use some of that storytelling Maclean and company did so well.
Exactly, man those vintage HNIC playoff intros were the cat's ass. Nobody can set up a game like Ron. His intro work with the guy that did those kick ass montage videos (who Rogers promptly fired to save $80k a year or whatever, which TOTALLY makes sense on a $5bil contract) were impeccable.
These were the good old days, when Ron and HNIC would really set the tone for a playoff game and get you totally hyped, as opposed to now where they treat every game like a Monday night Wild/Blue Jackets matchup and just cut the game right at puck drop.
This example below is just awesome, a full 7 minute intro with no blabbing random stats at a desk.
There's one thing that I've always loved about Ron Maclean, and he stated it very well in his book. On hosting - "Nobody is bigger than the game, so let it take centre stage".
I always loved the way that he would talk with the crowd warming up in the background and then as the players came out he'd always say "Team X vs Team Y, game 1 of the Eastern conference finals........enjoy".

Not every criticism of Strombo's on-air personality can be attributed to older people, but the barrage of "hipster" type comments can be. Old people, and out of touch people.
Strombo is the most fashionable personality I've ever seen on Sportsnet. Period. Extremely attractive sense of style. If your criticism is about tight suits and involve the word "hipster," that's strictly a petty age/out of touch thing.

Agreed, but how many posts have been about that so far?

I disagree. He just simply isn't his own person. It's not a generational thing. He towes the party line and falls into the latest trends for the biggest gains. There are on-air personalities, and then there is George, who doesn't have one. He's great at being an impartial intro, but there was never any substance to it or emotion. Wish him the best though..
I actually like them both in that roll for different reasons. Not upset either way.
For me, the HNIC host needs to direct multiple personalities at once, while keeping all of them on topic. Something I personally think Ron is better at then anyone else. Strombo is much better at one on one conversations with time on his side. Fully able to make most people comfortable in a genuinely awkward situation and have them open up, a talent that isn't really necessary for the HNIC host. He's much more suited to 30 minute one on one conversations then directing HNIC.

Six, which is why I agree with both Cliff and Mastodon. Not every criticism of George comes from an out of touch / old person who never would have accepted him anyway but those people absolutely exist.
Strombo is a great media personality and tv host. But for whatever reason it just didn't seem to translate well on the hockey broadcasts.
I don't always agree with him but MacLean always brings more in depth and stirring conversation to the table. He just seems to be able to access issues that are deep rooted parts of the culture of the game. I think the more hardcore hockey fans want that, they don't just want to see someone update them on scores and throw to commercials.

Yeah that's a better explanation. Everything just seemed so rushed with strombo, but it only gave me the feeling he was rushing to commercials. Even Cherry was choked when his segment time was cut down, however they try to cover what they can and never seem too panicked. Sometimes less is more.. maybe it was how the network were directing things though, but your main guy should have a little insight or emotion.

Really? As someone in his early 30's I call BS. Sounds more like you would rather blindly label people who disagree with your opinion then have a spirited conversation on this issue. Calling people who aren't fans of Strombo "old" seems like a lazy way to make your opinion valid.
I didn't say the only people who dislike Strombo are old. But old viewers definitely like him less than younger ones.
While Stroumboulopoulos still did not fare well among respondents who identified themselves as “diehard fans,” his standing among younger fans is strong. Only 23 per cent of those from 18 to 34 would like to see less of him, while it went to 35 per cent for those 35 to 54 and 38 per cent for those older than 55.
Canadian media are extremely conservative, and our national icons are dominated by Boomers. They want the world to stay like it was in 1987. Which is why Peter Mansbridge will still be hosting the National when he's 70, and Maclean is back as the host of HNiC.

Panic move by Rogers. With low ratings they are already starting to scrap their plans of attracting a younger crowd to appease the older audience. I'm in the minority for sure but I'm not a fan of Ron MacLean as the host.

If you're including mine as one, it was specifically for my disdain for how tight suits have become and hoping for a shift back the other in the next few years. Nothing to do with ageism/hipster stuff, I love George, have followed him through his whole career be it radio, much music, the hour or HNIC.
I was a fan of Strombo when they made the announcement and I really wanted him to have a good run. But man he was awkward in the role, I just never got the impression that he actually cared deeply or had much knowledge about hockey.
Which really was his strong suit in his previous gigs, you felt that he really cared about the source material, but when it came to HNIC he just came across as over prepared, and unable to shoot from the hip on the topic of hockey.
