It kind of looks like a hawk moth. There are hundreds of variations and phenotypes so they can vary quite a bit in appearance.

Looks like its colouring is for mimicking a wasp or bee for protection. Hover flies and some other insects have similar characteristics.

Not entirely. The Wikipedia entry says that it belongs to the hawkmoth family Sphingidae.

Bump.
Was just in the backyard and came across hundreds of little red beetle looking things. There are bigger ones as well, which have black on them, the bigger they are the more black coloring they have and less red.
What are they and should I kill them with fire?

I bet they're box-elder bugs. Have you got an elder, maple, or ash? We've got a maple in our front yard, and on warm days, a huge mass of them will come out and sun themselves on the south-and west-facing concrete. They're bright red when they're young, then turn dark with red chevrons as they age.
