Just saw this, and yeah, easy to see why people who aren't into the game's history and lore would not get it.
It suffers from one of the same problems Batman vs Superman did - This movie's entire purpose was to set up a universe, so the number of pieces of lore that had to be introduced left the movie largely feeling disjointed. Solid CGI though.
Disappointed there was no poop quest... but that will have to wait for the World of Warcraft sequel, I guess.

This makes sense to set up the universe but I found the acting, wardrobe, and dialogue to be pretty terrible besides the CG. Llane looks like a peasant, Medivh looks like a homeless hipster, the teeth on the orcs are over the top and a little odd looking and laughable on Garrona.
I compared the acting and believability of Medivh to Christopher Lambert in Mortal Kombat just terrible. He is the god of lightning and doesn't act the part just like Medivh the protector of the land, I can't see it
Pretty staggering numbers from China and overseas in general. Currently $280M vs $32M domestically on a $160M budget. Much like Pacific Rim ($309M Foreign/$100M Domestic total, $190M budget), can you officially call this a success?

I don't think so, at least not yet. It needs 500 million world wide to break even apparently, and I don't think it has the legs to get there.

If it cost $160M to make, why do they need to $500M to break even?
Because the money is split with the theaters and distributors, plus you have to add on all the overhead (namely marketing) into it. The thing I've always heard is a film has to make triple its budget to break even. So even a movie like BvS which made almost $900 million didn't make that much profit at a $250 million budget.

Might get $400 but $500 seems out of reach. It's stalling already...now at $377 mil worldwide. If it wasn't for huge numbers in China it wouldn't even be close.
Didn't make it to a second week at any local theaters in these parts.
Because the budget listed is the cost to make the movie. It ignores distribution and marketing
And marketing can often cost 50% of what was spent making the movie itself.
That said, "Hollywood accounting" is a thing, and movie houses are notorious for flat out lying. Lucasfilm claims that Return of the Jedilost money, for instance.
Not surprised at all that China makes up a large portion of the profits and I bet neither is Blizzard. The game was/is massive over there.
