3.3M plus a NTC is a lot to pay for an aging Cam Ward, IMO.

In fairness we all know that that NTC has 1 team on it.

It's a bad signing because the Hurricanes are $8M under the floor with Bryan Bickell's bloated contract. They need to spend some money anyway.
That Stanley Cup run was ten years ago, you'd think the novelty of Cam Ward would have worn off - the guy's the Jar Jar Binks of the NHL.

This is such a terrible move to me.
Loyalty problem?
The financial difference between Ward and Reimer is probably minimal.
Yet the impact each would have on playoff potential is probably very high.
Why make this signing? Further proves an armchair GM could be better some times.

Cam Ward's NTC is a 15-team no-trade list in both years of the deal
That is a pretty substantial NTC for a player of his ilk

Holy mackerel. From the Canes' vantage point, that's over half of the rest of the league they can't deal him to. Wow.

Nobody would want to trade for Ward anyways.

$3.3M is almost the exact average player salary with a $71.4M cap and a 22 man roster.

They probably aren't planning on trading him. Lack and Ward may not be great, but they are a passable tandem for a couple of years. Really, looking at that team, goaltending is the least of their concerns. One of them will have to be exposed in the expansion draft though, probably Ward, and I doubt he gets picked. This is really a nothing signing for a bad team with lots of cap space.

Can you list Edmonton 15 times?
There should be a weighting system for NTCs, you have to list one team 3 or 4 times to be absolutely sure not to get traded there, anything less and you can be traded there but there are conditions.

I think the current SPC comes with an automatic one-team NTC already built in with the understanding that every player in the world is loathe to play in Edmonton.

The lesson here is be on a team that wins the cup early in your career and you're set for life no matter how you perform.
GMs continue to place high value on players who have the distinction of playing on a team that won the Stanley cup, despite the large amount of randomness/luck/chance that goes into that

You would think they will want him playing as much as possible to get a feel for how ready he is because they will have to choose between protecting him or Talbot in the expansion draft.
