OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to alter the country's national anthem to make the lyrics gender neutral, a move that comes as the new Liberal government focuses on being more inclusive toward women.
The bill would change the English version of "O Canada" to remove the words "in all thy sons command" and replace them with "in all of us command."
The changes, brought forward as a private member's bill by a Liberal Party lawmaker, passed easily in the House of Commons, which is controlled by the Liberals. It now goes to the appointed Senate, which generally approves measures passed by the elected House.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made gender inclusivity a focus since he was elected last October and named an equal number of men and women to his 30-member Cabinet. It was the first time gender parity had been achieved by Canada's team of ministers.

I'm on board with this. It should absolutely be gender neutral. I'm actually shocked that anyone would be against this revision.

It's one of those token changes that will get some people to complain about political correctness.
I don't think many people care either way. I don't. If someone feels better that it's gender neutral, then I guess it's a good thing.

Pretty stupid and unnecessary imo. Not the principle of gender equality, but just the fact they decided to do it all. Isn't their more pressing issues at hand?

I guess I don't really care, but is the change to "In all of us command" the best? I'm not a linguist, but does that make sense? Doesn't "In all of our command" make more sense while staying gender neutral?

it was a waste of time and money all those times too...look around at the ####ing world around us right now, an anthem that offended nobody until they were told to be offended is the least of our worries.

The line is "True patriot love in all thy sons command". This phrase is being sung to Canada, the country. It is saying that Canada commands (invokes?) true patriot love in all of its sons (citizens).
So "In all of us command" does convey the same meaning.
"In all of our command" conveys a different meaning: that we, the citizens, are in control of our patriotic love.

Maybe I'm a biased white male, but I don't really get this.
It's like the word "mankind". Do people really get confused or upset when the human race is referred to as "mankind"? Should we say man- and womankind as instead, to be politically correct? These terms are not used to isolate genders, but to unify them under one term.
Were people really upset about this?
