I think we're all guilty of underestimating the risks at times. With the beach being constructed there it would seem low risk to most people.

And I do see where you are coming from there is no way my kid would be in a foot of water at that age without me right there not a chance at that age. But at the end of the day this is just a terrible accident and who knows I haven't heard if the dad was near the toddler when he was taken or not

how much better is your day when you can judge some parents who had a tragedy happen to them?

How exactly are you "questioning" parents by calling them "morons" repeatedly?
Also, you accuse other posters of not reading about the incident, when it appears from your comments you haven't read up on it all.
It was a freak accident and you're being ignorant.

I'm pretty sure the parents were "right there" or they wouldn't have been able to grab the gator. So if you were there, your kid would still have been grabbed and dissentowner would be calling you a moron.

Do you know how fast a small gator moves in water? the parents could literally be holding the kids hand and still loose him.

Yes, if you were right there and allowing your two year old to wade in a lagoon where signs say do not swim and was populated by gators I would probably call you worse things than moron. Yes, this is a tragic accident, it was also a preventable accident that does not happen with proper parental supervision and just following the signs and common sense.

Such a tragedy, especially when it happened in front of the parents. When I was Florida I went to the alligator conservatory just outside Miami and it was pretty eye opening just how intelligent those animals are. They are modern day dinosaurs. Almost completely unchanged for millions of years. Fast, stealthy, strong and vicious. Nature has no desire to change them, as they are pretty much the perfect creature.
Very very sad that this happened.

Ok, why was the kid in the water? He is 2, in a lagoon, where there are no swimming signs posted everywhere. So why is this child in the water?

Does it need to? Signs are made to tell you what not to do and where not to go. They don't have to explain why and none of them do.
A No Trespassing sign means NO TRESPASSING. Do you need an explanation to actually listen to the sign?
The sign would have to read "No swimming because the water may contain pathogens. There is also no life guard on duty. There are also Alligators in every body of water in Florida including this one. Alligators are bad because they are aggressive and can eat children. These are the reasons not to swim in this pond".
This was very tragic and I truly feel sorry for these parents. But this was an easily preventable incident and would not of happened if the parents were following the rules. This wasn't a freak accident, it's the reality of swimming anywhere in Florida that isn't a man-made pool.

Hey dum dum, it is Florida. Pretty sure people know alligators live in Florida, maybe you learned something new. And Disney resorts have always been known to have gators as a possibility. Even then your point as usual means nothing as the signs saying no swimming should have been enough. Saying the parents do not have some degree of responsibility in this tragedy is wrong.

Really? So you would allow your 2 year old to wade in a lagoon where signs are posted saying no swimming and it is pretty damn obvious gators live in Florida and lagoons. Is that what you are implying? Really? I understand the cool thing is to be all bleeding hearts for any parent that loses as child even if their own stupidity was a factor in the child's death. I get that when pure negligence causes a tragic death most people don't care about that fact, it is feel bad for the family and let's turn a blind eye to why this happened and the fact it should never have if people were more responsible and careful. I see this day after day in my line of work, it is always someone else's fault or nobody's.

You don't need to be a bleeding heart, just don't be a grandstanding, judgemental dick.

If the risk was that large, they should have had the area fenced off.
It's a beach. You know there will be children there. A "no swimming" sign does not equate to "there is a very large risk your child will die if he goes anywhere near this water" sign.
Apparently Disney World has been operating for about 45 years and this is the first such incident. I seriously doubt that was the first child to wade in that water, which is adjacent to a resort and part of an easily accessible beach.
