Photo radar is garbage!!!
This may be a fata, since the story is apparently from September 2005... but just incase..
Quote:
An example of an anti-countermeasure that blends these two methods (automation and camouflage) is displayed above, in pictures of photo radar units installed in roadside "wheelie bins" that appear to be ordinary trash cans or recycle bins. We haven't found any evidence that the units pictured here are actually in use in Calgary or Edmonton (or other Alberta cities), but ones very much like them have been used in places such as South Australia and Germany, generally in areas where police manpower is insufficient to devote officers to traffic duty or where it is considered dangerous to locate a car-mounted radar unit.

I'm not sure, but I've heard that the Cameras have to be monitored by an officer.
There is always a van on 17th SW somewhere between 14th st and Crowchild. (heading toward Crowchild)
I'm not sure, but heading towards 14th st, there is something that I think could be a permanant camera set up. Its roughly on 18th st. or something. It is to yellow poles with a box tha looks like it has a picture of a Camera on it. I've never stopped to check it out or anything though. So I dont know.

You don't find it interesting how they're coming up with new ideas to catch those who do?

or the gov't could setup reasonable speed limits. the worst one IMO is heading west into Banff national park. there is absolutly NO reason why the limit has to suddenly go from 110 to 90. every divided highway like that in the states is set at 75mph i believe (roughly 120 km/h) so it makes no sense other than to generate revenue by ticketing those who'd like to drive a reasonable speed

I saw a cop literally jump out from behind some bushes and flag someone over the other day. It made me laugh!

Or parking the photo radar van directly in front of a backhoe at 3am in the morning at the Glenmore construction site. No workers around, just the van which is not in view at all from the road, just hidden.

what might be a good idea is to become friends with a can collector. They will know which recycling bins or garbage cans are really radar.

Due to the risk of wildlife collisions and the numerous fatalities resulting from them, 90 km/hr is a reasonable speed for that stretch.

Which limit? 40? 50? 60? 70? 90? 100? 110?
Not to mention there are times when it is necessary to exceed the limit (ie: passing on a non-divided highway).
I like the first answer: dont speed. Or, dont speed in excess of what the cops will give you. You will never get a photo radar ticket unless you drive more than 10kph over the limit. 110 down Deerfoot is more than enough.

I always thought reducing speeding through enforcement was a good thing?

The best was the other day when a cop was hiding behind one of those construction workers w/ a sign on 14th/Glenmore.
I don't speed on Glenmore, but that 50 limit is absolutely terrible, considering most of the time they don't even have construction crews working after the bridge heading westbound, going 50 is pretty useless.
Now if they wanted to actually start working past the bridge... thats another story.

Thank goodness we have people to tell all those folks whose job it is to set up speed limits how to do their job.
Seriously, you can't think of one good reason why the speed limit should be reduced in an environmental protection area where there is a large population of big game that may on occasion want to cross the highway?

Or move to London where there is so much traffic you physically cannot go over the limit.
I have been overtaken before by bicycles, skateboards and grannies on those motorised wheelchairs.
If back to the future was made here the Doc would still be trying to hit 88.

Introduce a speed regulator in cars and you also introduce a large community of people who'll remove those regulators.
People speed. Some people (tailgaters, lane weavers) are more idiotic than others. Personally, I don't see the harm of going 10-15km/h over the limit on a wide-open highway or freeway (unless there's a lot of wildlife around, like Banff and Jasper).
In residential areas or high-traffic commercial areas (e.g. downtown)? Where there's tons of people or kids playing around? Go easy. If cops are using photo radar, I'd sooner see them use it in these areas than highways or freeways.

See I don't have a problem with speeding either. Lord knows I'm usually a little over myself (especially on the highway, and REALLY ESPECIALLY on my bike on the highway). What bugs me is when people complain about getting caught. If you don't want to get caught don't speed, but if you're speeding don't whine when you get caught.
