I recall being impressed with Gulutzan and what he did with building the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers from scratch, and while it was the lower echelon of pro hockey he did fine with the Flames prospects he was given.

Now we move to Vancouver who most of us believe is "no good". Well Gulutzan has been a big part of this "no good" team.
Screw this hiring if the news is true.
For those that think Treliving can do no wrong. Well this is far from being the best HC. Nope this is "no good".

I seriously shake my head at humanity.
I question the character as having none of anyone that would insult a person's Grandparents or parents like that.
As for Gulutzan I tnought defended my reasons but no that's not good enough. Lynch mob mentality is perfect way to sum up some people's behavior.
But if that makes a person feel tall I will never get that.

Didn't you call Treliving scum and a sleaze or something? On the Internet? Where he couldn't even defend himself?

Get off your high horse, it's been dead a while.

They changed it on us .

I want more of that sweet sweet coach compensation pickage. Why'd they do that to us right when we had three people that could possibly be poached.

I mean... I'm still living in the previous 12 month period, not 30 years ago.

I thought they only removed compensation for people who had been fired?

Draft-pick compensation for the hiring of coaches and executives from other teams will be eliminated, effective Jan. 1, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday following the completion of the Board of Governors meeting.

The original policy was put into effect Jan. 1, 2015, in part to allow for compensation for coaches and executives under contract who departed for a position with another team. But it morphed to include coaches and executives who had been fired but remained under contract.

Now the League will return to the previous policy, which requires teams to grant permission to its coaches and executives under contract to interview with other teams. If permission is granted and the coach or executive changes teams, there will no longer be any compensation to the team losing personnel.

Travis Green was apparently interviewed. It looks like Treliving liked Gulutzan more and I don’t blame him.

When I look at the resumes of all the potential candidates, Gulutzan really has the most impressive and experienced record. I think coaches, like players have to be developed, and the way to develop is to gain experience (can be good or bad) at different roles, positions, and levels.

The best coaches in the NHL right now all went through extensive development as assistants and head coaches at both the minor pro and NHL levels. Guys like Darryl Sutter, Joel Quenneville, Claude Julien, Alain Vigneault all served as assistants and head coaches at both the minor pro and NHL levels. Mike Babacock skipped the assistant position in the NHL, but he spent 8 years as a head coach in the WHL prior to getting a head coaching gig in the AHL. Even Scotty Bowman spent 11 years coaching in the minors before getting an NHL job.

Green has really only been coaching for 4 years. He spent half a season as an assistant coach in the WHL and had to take over a stacked team when his coach was suspended. After that, he immediately jumped to the AHL with moderate success. He had made it known that he wanted to be a head coach in the NHL now and I wonder if he’s a little short on experience. I think his next step should probably be as an assistant coach at the NHL level, because the fact is, he’s never even been behind an NHL bench yet. Could Travis Green be some special coaching prodigy who doesn’t need the experiences that Hall of Fame coaches before him gained? Maybe, but if I’m Treliving, I’m certainly not going to be taking that risk.

Similarly, Reirden has been an assistant coach for 8 of 10 seasons in his career. He’s been an assistant at the college level, 1 season in the AHL, and the last 6 seasons as an assistant in the NHL. In terms of head coaching experience, he has a total of 106 games at the AHL level with moderate success. When looking at his limited head coaching experience, it’s hard to fathom why so many posters are wanting him for the Flames job. He really profiles as an elite assistant coach.

When you analyze the resumes, Gulutzan has both Green and Reirden beat both in terms of experience and success. Gulutzan is much farther along in the development cycle compared to both of these guys. Of all the potential “up and comer” candidates that have been rumoured, the only one that has a comparable resume to Gulutzan is Kevin Dineen, but there have also been rumours that he has been a bit of a hard ass, which may not be the type of personality for the Flames after having Hartley.

When I analyze all the resumes and absorb all the information out there about the candidates, Gulutzan does seem like a good choice and that is just looking at resumes, which is all we as fans can do. Treliving also interviewed him and the other candidates, so he’s working with even more information than we are. We really won’t know if this is the right decision, but I’m comfortable in knowing that Treliving has done his homework.

All I really know about Gulutzan is that he was born in the town I'm from. If it is true I hope Treliving made the right decision as I didn't think Hartley deserved to be fired.

With everything, it depends. Gulutzan may end up being a decent coach for the team, or, he may not. There are consequences for the organization in either scenario. I think that if the Flames have similar struggles at the beginning of the season next year, not only will the coaching staff be in danger of being replaced, but so will the entire management structure of the team.

Great coaches learn and adapt, and Gulutzan seems like a smart young guy that would be more than capable of doing so. I imagine he faced interview questions that centered around what he's learned in his time coaching so far, what he'd have done differently in Dallas, etc.

I know Brian Burke has mentioned in the past that one of his interview questions is to ask people to tell him about a time they have failed in the past.

In SGs original post he pointed out his concerns with the rumoured hiring of Gulutzan and correlated it to his performance (record) as an NHL coach. Isn't that a reasonable justification? If you are hiring an employee (which the management is) you're damn well going to look at his resume and see what he has accomplished. I'm not agreeing with SG and I haven't read enough of his posts to know whether or not he has an unfounded disdain for Treliving but in this particular instance I can see where his concerns stem from.

This is a forum people. Expect (dare I say welcome) a difference of opinion.
It's not differing opinions that's the problem. There's plenty of people who are concerned with this hire and have expressed it in a much more modest manner. It's, as Textcritic put it, the abrasive and snap judgments, like calling him Gilbert 2.0, or the immediate emotionally fueled reaction that's quite premature and unwarranted.

You even admitted to not having read enough of SG's posts. So before you go and tell other forum members to welcome a difference of opinion (which most do), or calling it "pitiful", I suggest you actually sift through some of the guy's posts to see if there might be a reason behind the reaction to SG's posts in particular. Until then, you're equally as judgmental as you are making the rest of us out to be.

While the Flame's core is still young, I think it's a great idea to hire someone who can develop some better habits in them now so they don't default to playing poor possession hockey in their prime.

I'll trust in Treliving's judgment on this one if Gulutzan is indeed hired. He's interviewed the guy, which is more than what any member of this forum can claim to have done.

If this was a done deal wouldn't there be something on tsn.ca or sportsnet.ca to the tune of "Flames Expected to Name Gulutzan Coach".

All I can find on tsn is a short video with Jamie McLennan taking about him as a finalist and sportsnet only has an article saying the Flames will name a new coach by the draft.

I don't live in Canada any more so I only have the websites and not the TV channels but I would expect to see something on them if the insiders thought they had the info.

Maybe the sports reader at the Lethbridge CTV station isn't enough of an insider for us to be ripping each others dead grandmas

I know virtually nothing about Gulutzan other than he coached in Dallas and Vancouver and I've been told he's a "newer style coach." At the end of the day I gotta trust Treliving. Sounds like he knew what he was looking for and found it. He has been in the business a long time and I think has a vision which I think would be kind of dumb for me to feel like I know better. We all have opinions but I have to trust that his is obviously a lot more informed than any of us so hopefully this ends up being a great choice.
