Hopefully BT can find a way to make things work without buying anyone out.

This team is set up really nicely as after this next season the only really bad contract they will still have on the books is Stajan.

It'd be a shame to muck that up by carrying extra buy out cap hits into that pretty clean slate.

As my friend Finger Cookin pointed put, need Stajan and Bouma/Jooris around for expansion rules.

Like Freeway stated in his article, I could see buying out Stajan next June as a distinct possibility and something I would support if he has another rough season but the thought of having his buyout penalty salary carry over for 4 more years if he's bought out this June is very unappetizing.

Raymond, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind buying out at all this June.

Pretty much agree with the whole article. Smid more than likely can't be bought out so he really shouldn't be on the list.

As for Wideman, if they can't trade him before the buy-out closes, then they should buy him out.

We probably won't know until the afternoon of June 28th, which is the last day you can put a player on unconditional waivers for 24 hours and then buy someone out before the deadline for buyouts.

The Flames won't know if they have any chances signing some free agents until about June 27th or 28th (after a few days of discussions), which determines if they need cap space. They also won't know if they need cap space until after the draft and after the RFA deadline.

No buyout for Bolland apparently:

Heard from reliable source Dave Bolland failed physical and won't be bought out. Panthers: "no comment at this time" http://sprtsnt.ca/1Q0PA01

If Smid can be bought out, he should. He's the only one I think is worth buying out. Unfortunately, he might not pass medical. In that case, LTIRetirement for him is fine. Sorta agree with article, won't be bought out. But if he's medically cleared, he would be first on my list.

Wideman IMO has a better chance of being 50% salary retained (which ownership hates) then traded, than a buyout. I think money for him not to play with us is about the same, but then he's an asset at TDL. Agree with article, shouldn't be bought out, but there is more reasoning to buy him out than I had realized.

Stajan could use some time being tested as a 2/3RW with Backlund vs 4C. I wouldn't buy him out. But I'm curious if he'd clear waivers to reach buyout. Agree with article, no buy out.

Raymond, I'd just leave in the minors for a season. He was doing well there. If someone will take him 50% retained, go for it. But with 1 year left, I'd just ride it out vs buy out. Agree with article no buy out.

Raymond: I'd expect a buy-out

Wideman: will make more sense to retain a bit of cash ($1M-2M) and trade him, versus buying him out
Smid: I think he will remain "injured" this season, and so he'll collect his full salary, while not counting against our cap
Stajan: buy-out is way too pricey for him, not going to happen (maybe next year?)

The Flames hate buying players out. I doubt they make any moves especially with an expansion draft looming when one of those guys could get picked off by LV.

By the time they have an expansion draft all of these players will be basically UFA's except for Stajan.

I agree though, I doubt they buy anyone out. The only way BT does it is if he has big plans to use the cap space IMO.
