Default If the Flames had the number one pick

With the draft approaching, who would the Flames draft had they possessed the number one slot?

A. Matthews - potential franchise center
B. Laine - the real deal winger with amazing goal scoring potential
C. Trade No. 1 to No. 2 with the agreement to select the player the other team wants - mostly likely have them select Matthews and select Laine

Calgary is in a good position with Monahan / Bennett down the middle both being young and great upside. We're weak outside of JG for both established talent on the wings. What would you do as GM?

Take Matthews and move Bennett to LW or move down 1 spot and take Laine.

Trade down to 2, pick up a goalie, draft Laine

Matthews and deal with the "problem" of which highly skilled centre you put on the wing.

I'm in the move down one spot and take Laine camp, should Toronto (i'd presume to be second) would be willing to part with a decent piece.

I would prefer they draft Laine. I don't think there is much of a gap between Mathews and Laine, and Laine would address 3 large holes on the Flames in one full swoop: Highly skilled top 6 player with a RHS for the PP, Size, and a RW.

If the Flames had the 2nd pick, and Laine was taken, I would take Mathews ahead of Puljujarvi because though Puljujarvi fits just as well as Laine would on the Flames, I think the gap is a little larger between Mathews and Puljujarvi, and I really believe in BPA.

Remember that time there was a billion dollar powerball and you didn't win?
Let's discuss what you would have done with that money

Similar to the Taylor vs Tyler debate. To me the top line center trumps the top winger.

Don't care to consider it really. Calgary doesn't have the pick and would rather wonder who they will pick at #6.
