Alain Vignault—regarded by most as one of the best coaches in the game today—began his NHL career with an underwhelming three year stint in Montreal that saw him register a 0.413 winning percentage.

Hoping anyway.
At very least the associate label from Treliving is a good sign of a bolstered bench with lots of grey matter.
|
Could be. Sureloss mentioned Reirden is "assistant coach" with washington. Is "associate coach" enough of step up to get him to leave Wash?

General question about this: Don't most teams call their assistant coaches "associate coaches" now? Tomato, tomato?

Was thinking that too. A bump from "Assistant" to "Associate" along with a bump in pay maybe?

I would expect not. If the hierarchy in coaching is anything like in my profession, then "Associate" is absolutely a step up from "Assistant" that is also accompanied by a respectable pay increase.

Sounds like a lot of text critics in that company.

Or maybe Dineen as associate? Would explain the last-minute interview after BT already admitted knowing who his guy was.

The track record prior to that isn't great. But really, what do we know about coaching in the end...

As has already been pointed out, the other guy who was an Assistant under Torts (who also had a mediocre first spin as an NHL head coach) just won the Stanley Cup.

Liking what I'm hearing. Low profile X's and 0's coach is exactly what the team needs. The players need a coach with such high level knowledge of strategy that they go to him for input because they trust his knowledge.
The whole motivator thing is overrated imo, the players have been working since they were little kids to be pros and none of them got to the Flames with laziness.
Hoping we get a coach that permanently increases the teams hockey IQ. Mix up the zone entering strategy, make quick short passes in our d zone if the exit pass isn't available, maintain puck possession longer. Those kind of improvements transcend a tenure. It's not that the raw talent was missing it's that the Flames tried to force low % low reward plays at speed.
If the opposition is already backing up and they are obviously going to standup at the blueline don't force a quick exit pass to a winger to try to spring the centre loose. Take the time in those situations instead of giving it away, if the play's not there don't force it. The game seems much closer and much faster when we constantly try to force low reward plays.

the more i'm hearing and thinking about it, gulutzan seems like a decent hire for a few reasons:
1. bt is obviously after a certain profile of coach, and judging by what he's said publicly and the names that are rumoured as the finalists, the finalists seem to be more alike than they are different. they are all supposed to be strong tacticians who can also help develop players. this is exactly what we need, and the personal differences (like background, etc.) b/w the coaches seem less important.
2. gulutzan has been in charge of some pretty good special teams. his pk was the only part of vancouver's season this year that wasn't vomit-inducing, and his pp was the top in the league in 2013-2014 (kesler credited him for that success and called him an extra intelligence on the pp).
3. gulutzan is supposed to be the most progressive mind on the vancouver staff, and he wasn't a dim jim hire.
4. this is the least important, but gulutzan has had a priot stint in the nhl, so we could hope that he has learned from his prior stint
anyway, i think my main point is that there is reason for optimism for now with any of the hires. the speculation about a bolstered associate coach position is also heartening. i hope we get to see a flames team that holds on to the puck soon.

Gulutzan as HC is Greg Gilbert 2.0
Todd Reirdon at least shows promise and has some accomplished credibility. Gulutzan failed in Dallas and the Canucks are not a success story in the last 3 years. Gulutzan is a warm body hire I sure hope that he is not the choice.

So many people talking out of their asses based around one or two articles they read and nothing more.
Gulutzan helped build a brand new echl team in Vegas and has also already been a head coach in the NHL, both of which sound like some very valuable learning experiences.
I don't know any more than anyone else, but I'm not pretending to know either. Wait and see and hope.

Nah, Gulutzan won't be Gilbert 2.0.
There are no Thrashers for him to force our young future star second line centre to, anymore.

The Canucks current failure is a management problem more than anything. That roster is awful.

at least get your Armageddon analogy right.
I think Hay is a better example if you are doom and gloom. Previous stint in Phoenix, given the job in Calgary.
Gilbert was a first time coach in Calgary and never seen from again.

I find opposition to a Trevliving move puzzling.
And by that I don't mean everything he does is right, but every thing he does is extremely well thought out, processed, analyzed and thought through.
He's the GM, he picked his coach, ... that's the good news.
If he was forced to hire say Carlyle I'd be very spooked about the future of this franchise, but the guy looks to have nailed down who HE thinks is his best candidate, and that's a good thing.
Pretty sure he didn't just look at wins and losses, may have dug a little deeper than that.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know what assistant and associate coaches make? And what the difference between them would be?

Hahaha! WHAT??!!
Greg Gilbert:
· 1996–2000 AHL: 0.537 winning percentage in four full seasons, with his highest (0.625) occurring in his first year as a professional coach.
· 2000–03 NHL: 0.442 winning percentage in less than two full seasons after which he was ignobly dismissed, and has never again coached in the NHL.
Greg Gulutzen:
· 2009–11 AHL: 0.597 winning percentage in two seasons.
2011–13 NHL: 0.527 winning percentage in two seasons—one of which was lockout shortened.
We do not yet have a good read on Gulutzen's quality as a NHL coach, but to compare him to Gilbert is preposterous. He is demonstrably a MUCH better coach, and it is not even close.
