Yeah no, it's not a bargain as they were free garbage bags a month ago.

It's a money grab by Wallyworld as they know full well that charging 5 cents a bag is not going to do very much in the way of getting customers to go green.

It probably is a money grab but some people might actually switch to reusable bags. My other half shops at Walmart sometimes for groceries and she would always just use the plastic bags. When she went a couple of weeks ago she actually made a point of taking our reusable bags because she didn't want to pay 5 cents per bag.

They have stronger bags now and pack them as full as possible, I don't mind the 5 cents since they're bagging better

Is this only going to be Visa credit cards, or also the Visa debit cards? If its both I guess I won't be shopping at Wal-Mart anymore

Just reading up on the history here. This is a war between the two companies that goes back decades.

In the US, Walmart is already suing Visa on claims that the latter is trying to force Walmart into using the old-style signature verification debit cards rather than EMV because they can charge more for use of the older network. Even as Visa tries to push everyone to EMV on credit cards.

There is virtually no chance your debit card isn't co-branded as Interac and Visa Debit. You'd be fine.

it would be interesting to know how far apart they are on fee's - I was thinking 0.5% or less

I'd be shocked if AMEX fees were lower than what Visa is offering.

I'm not a huge Walmart shopper but they are just so damn convenient for many things that I do go there frequently. That will come to an end if they stop taking Visa.

I do wonder if this is a negotiating tactic and they will end up making peace with Visa.

I despise Walmart like no other. I'm clearly on their side here. Visa is criminal with their fee increases

Man, I don't know why people make such strong proclamations without knowing anything other than their own preconceived notions on whether an idea works (also see: carbon tax).

Here's a link for you.

Thus, the paper concludes that the bag charge might have worked "both by the activation of pre-existent pro-environmental attitudes and by a direct effect of the charge on behavior." In addition, it suggests that the new policy worked in another way as well -- by being disruptive of the status quo and changing people's default options and choices. "After the introduction of the plastic bag charge, customers had to explicitly approve or request to obtain a bag and pay for it," notes the study. They couldn't just get one without thinking about it.

Walmart hasn't stated what fees Visa is charging, but Visa says they are among the lowest offered; even then there was no mention at all about a fee increase. Also, Walmart is going to keep accepting Amex, which undoubtedly has higher transaction fees.

Guess I won't be going to Wal-mart.

I literally buy everything on Visa, unless its a rare time I have cash.

I use credit all the time and only have a visa. This will probably change the frequency of Walmart visits. The only place I use debit is Costco.

I've never missed Target more than now. This is pathetic.

I'm not carrying an extra card in my already thinned out wallet nor am I adding another CC bill that will be another thing to manage in my banking.

My business buys a lot of stuff from Wal-Mart and now our expense cards will have to be changed as well as they are VISAs.

Canada needs more retail alternatives.

Ya I can't see this being anything more than negotiating or use the Walmart MC ploy. My Amex processing rate is twice that of MC and Visa, however would they get twice as many Visa to Amex charges?

It probably hasn't impacted Dion using reusable bags. For many people that's an indication the whole world is like that.

Amex has a much more compelling reason for higher fees, their customers spend more. Visa is more expendable than M/C and they consistently raise fees. As a merchant I can honestly say that Visa is the devil that holds us hostage and I'm glad someone finally said enough

I really like walmart. They keep prices low. I'm guessing if it wasn't for walmart we'd all be paying $15 for a tube of toothpaste. They push the supplier for lower prices cause they can. When there's competition the consumer wins. Nothing wrong with that. Tom's corner market can't tell the supplier how it's going to be.
