Default Second Line Going into Next Year

Just a random thought that I didn't know where to put on an existing thread. And hell, it's June. Why not.

First off I am of the opinion that we shouldn't go after any UFA's this year and even if we are in the playoffs we should be sellers at the deadline. See what we have at the end of the year and go from there when we have cap space. Obviously that leaves us with a bit of a hole on Bennett's line though.

Pribyl, Ferland, Stajan and Shinkaruk can battle it out for #1 RW while Colborne - Backlund - Frolik can be a solid 3rd line that gets tough minutes. Then I'd like to go with an offensive young line full of rookies and sophomores. They should be able to get some favorable and easier matchups with the other two lines.

Jankowski - Bennett - Dubois/Tkachuk

That would be my dream scenario. I don't know who would be playing center. Brown and then Nylander are my next two draft picks. If the draft pick isn't ready(or Jankowski) keep to the young guy angle. Shinkaruk, Ferland, Pribyl, Porier, Klimchuk, Hathaway. Whoever impresses at the start of the season.

We aren't contending next year, California is still going to be ridiculous. I don't see any reason to overspend on a UFA when we have so many young guys that could potentially have chemistry together.

Edit; Just wanted to say the UFA thing does not apply to goalies. I want a starter haha

In my view Bennett is still learning the center position. As you said nobody really to play with him (yet). For next year Colborne - Backlund - Frolik is probably the 2nd line.

To be honest the definition of 2nd and 3rd lines are starting to blur for me. I just called Backlunds line the "3rd" since he would get the defensive match-ups.

I don't know if going with a kid line is smart. Frankly we don't even know of Janko or the guy they get a 6 will be NHL ready, let alone for top 6 minutes.
I anticipate you'll see the Flames sign a UFA to compete for a top 6 spot. Not a high end guy, but something further down the list - like a Michael Grabner.
Of course these rarely work out (see Raymond), but I think we'll see a signing like that of some sort.

I am not too keen on a UFA either, but it sure looks like we have at least 2 winger spots open, and I am very doubtful the kids can fill in. Maybe Shinkaruk or Ferland for one spot, in a pinch.

I definitely do not think the organization wants to be a seller next year and the team will focus on making the playoffs. Right now the makeup of the team will be a top line and then the Bennett and Backlund lines which will be our 2nd and 3rd line just not sure which is which.

Right now I have a third line of Bouma/Ferland-Backlund-Frolik. As for the Bennett line I see Shinkaruk-Bennett-Colborne/Ferland/Porier

I'd be fine with those lines as well.

As for the selling. I hope stajan, wideman, engellend and bouma all have career years and we sell high. Obviously not any big pieces

I think Treliving will be acquiring a winger through trade or UFA. So guessing the 2nd line is pretty hard until we see who he acquires. Frankly Backlund's line may be considered the 2nd line until Bennett starts to excel.

If Flames go the UFA route for a goalie, then I see a trade for a winger. No way the team drafts 3 times in the 2nd round IMO.

I don't anticipate a UFA forward signing unless it a real bargain guy.

I could see Shinkaruk as a possibility. I see him quite often and he's really bulked up over the past little while.

I'd feel better about Janko starting the year at C in Stockton and being recalled for an injury or trade

I think they need t start the season with Colborne · Backlund · Frolik to see how they do; this is in theory a really solid second line.

Agreed. 3 guys who can (and have) scored 20 is an enviable 2nd line.
Though I do think Bennett needs the opportunity to flourish. Whether that's as a 2nd line winger or 3rd line C I'm not sure. But it seems like they're set on developing him as a C so we might have lines 2a and 2b.

Where do you see him? Your location says Toronto but he's been working out in Calgary.

And you're right, Shinkaruk imo will be on the Flames next year.

Hopefully this does not affect his speed.

To me #2 line is the line with second most minutes in a game, that should be Backlund's line. Hopefully Colborne can keep up the way he finished the season.

Gaudreau - Monahan - ?
Colborne - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - ?
Bouma - Stajan - ?

Hopefully Grant is signed and gets a shot. Really the Flames RW situation needs major help. Pribyl is signed but who knows where he ends up.

I don't know who his wingers will be but I think Bennett will be the 2nd line C. We know what we have in Backlund, he isn't going to get any better and he is an ideal 3rd line C.
You need to give Bennett those top 6 minutes as he is already developing at a great pace and looks ready.
