I'm not sure Jokipakka is better then those guys.
If I had to bet I think we end up losing Stajan. I think they load up on younger players from other teams and use the pick from the Flames as part of the effort to get some short term cap to meet the floor.

With Jokipakka's age and ability I think he might be the best player we expose, granted I am not as high on Ferland as most. For Bouma, it really depends on his health and how he bounces back. And you very well could be right about Stajan, he could make a great veteran leader for a young expansion team but I wouldn't say he is the better player, maybe the better choice though. Colborne if I had to bet would be protected the way things sit now, he's not even in the same conversation as the other guys listed. But as we all know, 1 year can change everything.

watch, even if they do announce expansion goes forward, they will not publish the list of exempt players until after the season is over. keep everyone arguing all summer and season

If I was the Vegas GM, I'd probably take 18-20 players with significant NHL experience and 10-12 prospects who are close to NHL ready but can still play in the AHL, filling out my NHL roster with a few free agent signings.
If Matt Stajan is the best experienced player available from the Flames, I might be inclined to take a chance on Culkin or Kulak, or even Arnold or Agostino as AHLers with NHL upside (depending on how they do next season).

I think you are onto something but I think they are more likely to take say 15 with significant NHL experience, 10 prospects and 5 younger bubble players (either NHL cusp or 3rd line cusp, so maybe a Wotherspoon or a Ferland)

It'll be hard to find those prospects who have three years of pro and so are eligible for this draft but won't need to pass through waivers. I think they'll need to be active on the trade market in order to pick up some prospects.

Just a guess but expiring contracts may be the issue (along with elc exemptions).
for example, if the flames sign nakladal to a 1 yr deal, then he, Wideman, Smid, + Engelland don't count (maybe). Jokipakka would be the only eligible d the flames have (?) Without that rule the flames maybe think about trading him with 30 games left and calling up an exempt player. Better to get a pick for him than just lose him in expansion.
At F it's not hard to imagine a team with 6 or more exempt players & UFAs, and 7 or fewer players to protect on their rosters. Guessing the leafs, jets, coilers might fit that?

Would Joki count in that situation? He too would be without a contract

Yeah maybe. I was thinking UFAs not RFAs (and may have screwed up nakladal in that btw)
My speculation was if you just think of UFAs and exempt players, teams might have a roster (or engineer one) where they don't have anyone to lose at F or D.
If I get some time later I might poke into some rosters and see if it could be true.

So, unless some teams decide NOT to protect their current or future star-players for whatever reasons, the expansion team (or teams) will consist entirely of 3rd and 4th line forwards, 3rd and 4th pairing defencemen and backup goalies. Correct?

Whats the minimum amount of games Kylington would have to play to be considered a Forward for protection reasons? Even if hes exempt, im still curious. The draft might be deferred to 2017-18.

I think the terms are pretty clear, not sure how it could be misinterpreted that Kylington or Gilles is eligible to be drafted. The way I see it, the following Flames are ineligible:
Kylington
Gilles
Anderson
Mangiapane
Jankowski
Prybl
McDonald
Klimchuk
Pollock
Smith
Carroll
Schneider
Kanzig
All 2016 Draft Picks
Can someone sticky this at the top of this thread?

^ Klimchuk has to be protected no? 21 years old and played in AHL in 2013-14 (4 GP only though), last season and then this upcoming season...

4 games in the AHL as a 19 year old won't count as a season of pro experience. 15-16 and 16-17 will give him 2 seasons, which means he won't need to be protected.
Also, Shinkaruk would probably not be exempt. 74 AHL games in 14-15, 62 AHL games in 15-16, plus his pro experience for the upcoming season. Unless the CBA clause being used is the one posted by getbak. Which seems to only define accrued NHL experience for the purposes of determining Group 2 free agency, not pro experience.

No, Klimchuk just played his 20 year old season and it was his first pro season, next year will only be his second so he is exempt.

In addition I do believe Pribyl will not be exempt due to his pro games in Europe.

Pro games in Europe should only count when the player was signed to an NHL SPC, per the CBA clause on page 1. Pribyl wasn't signed to an NHL contract prior to this offseason, so pro games in Europe prior to that shouldn't impact his expansion draft eligibility.

My mistake, I thought it was games from age 20 for him. Not that I am overly concerned about him being available or not.
