Again, echoing what everyone else is saying, no point of keeping them around.
Don't destroy existing animals though. Just put a ban on breeding them
Wake up world. There's is no benefit to the risk.

I really have no problem at all with a ban going forward, I just think it doesn't address the root of the problem. Want a dog? Any size any breed? Here's your mandatory 2 week course. Want a large dog? Be prepared to bare the full brunt of responsibility in the event of an incident.

If a cat weighed 80 pounds and could kill a full size human let alone a small child you might be on to something.

My cougar is also a total sweetie. Just an old lap cougar. Loves younger men and pretty much wants to "cuddle" all the time.
What are we talking about here?

Ask yourself this. Have you ever saw anyone who owned a pit bull at the park or wherever walking their dog who didn't look like your typical pit bull owner? and now take away the dog out of the equation completely. Would you ever want that person as a neighbour?
It's like this dog attracts the worst kind of person. Add that to the fact the dog is dangerous as hell and you have a recipe for disaster. I've literally never met a pit bull owner who didn't look like they've just got out of jail or spent the night in Remand.

Yeah, this is kind of the crux of the point of people not putting blame on the breed of dog, but the people that generally want them. Make it incredibly restrictive to own them and those people won't bother. You think DBag Joe wants to attend dog classes?
At the same time, there are "normal" people that own these dogs for sure, and they are not without incident. But if outright ban is the way we go, what do we do with all the dogs currently owned, in shelters, being born as puppies, etc..?

A part of this story that I do not understand is why the dog was left alone in the backyard, unsupervised. Why isn't a large breed dog like this secured in the house or even chained in the yard if you are going to leave it alone?
I have a large dog, she is scared of strangers, strangers won't come into our yard because she barks and tells them to leave basically. Our yard is secure, she can't get out but if we aren't home, I don't leave her outside alone in order for her to get out of our yard.
How does that even happen in this story. The owner should absolutely be charged for this and what is the maximum penalty for being criminally negligent in this situation?

The problem is that if we ban pit bulls, those d-bags will just pick a different breed of dog to prop up their miserable persona.

Agreed. That's my biggest issue with the story as well.

The police should absolutely nail people who don't have their dogs securely contained in their property.
Last week I was walking my puppy with my kids and a huge mastiff ran down from his lawn and started sniffing him. It didn't attack or anything, but our puppy was terrified. A couple young kids from the house tried to corral the mastiff, who has having none of it. No adult in sight.
We booked it across the street without incident, but it was an unpleasant experience. I walked by the same house a couple days later, and the owner was sitting on a chair out front. Judging from his appearance, I'd guess that obeying bylaws aren't high on this guy's priorities.

ya, off leash dogs in their yard with their owners are the worst. They think they can control their dogs, usually that is not the case. Call 311 and report that guy, doesn't sound very safe and you never know what could happen.

The reason idiots like these dogs is precisely because they are an innately aggressive dog and while they surely would get other dogs those breeds, such as German shepherds are less innately aggressive.

Well there is no other dog as dangerous as a pit bull so it'll be an improvement at least.

I'm curious about what your plan is for the dogs currently in homes, shelters, etc.. and their potential offspring.
