Not sure this was posted but this fellow says Vegas is a done deal.

Quote:
Well, we’ve finally confirmed the news we hoped we would get when this day started.
Our sources in Las Vegas with extensive knowledge of the organization and the expansion process have confirmed the Executive Committee formulated a positive recommendation for expansion to Las Vegas and the official announcement will come on June 22nd prior to the NHL Awards ceremony.
There has not yet been confirmation on division, expansion draft date, or any other details as previously reported by Francois Gagnon.
http://sinbin.vegas/executive-commit...gas-expansion/

Francois Gagnon says it will be in the Pacific Division.

Quote:
"In all the discussions we have had and all the documentation provided, there was never any question of Quebec. The name Las Vegas is mentioned, however, even indicating that the new team will enter the league from the beginning of the 2017-2018 season and the club will evolve in the Pacific Division, "said a source close to RDS.CA folder.

The NHL wants to create a West/East balance.

Expansion for the west only, relocation (if necessary) for the east. Quebec may get a team, but it will be a relocated Eastern conference team. Same deal for a second Toronto team.

The Oilers will never finish 7th in the Pacific again after 2016-17!

Default Expansion decision expected by June 22

I'm only hoping for something not SUPER cliché

Which means it'll obviously be the Aces, or the Gamblers, or Siegfrieds, or Outlaws, or something awful.

I could handle Aces if they with with a mostly pilot/air force theme

If anything, I could see all the pacific teams being a division by themselves and then the mountain teams being thrown in with the central teams. Travel time from Vegas and Phoenix to the SoCal teams is also very quick and easy. Seems like a natural to leave them in the pacific and let Calgary and Edmonton continue to deal with the travel headaches.
My reasoning is: I'm anal and seeing one Canadian team mixed in with 6+ American teams is weird to me. And I really want see the new Jets develop rivalries with the Flames and Oilers like the nasty ones the old Jets had with them 20+ years ago.

I get that, but they are more worried about teams crossing time zones than building rivalries between Canadian clubs.

I think if the NHL expanded to 32 teams, you'd see eight divisions of four teams. Something like:

SMYTHE DIVISION

Edmonton
Calgary
Vancouver
Seattle

GRETZKY DIVISION

Los Angeles
San Jose
Anaheim
Las Vegas

SAKIC DIVISION

Arizona
Dallas
Colorado
Nashville

NORRIS DIVISION

Winnipeg
Minnesota
Chicago
St. Louis

PATRICK DIVISION

NY Rangers
NY Islanders
New Jersey
Philadelphia

HOWE DIVISION

Detroit
Pittsburgh
Buffalo
Columbus

RICHARD DIVISION

Toronto
Montreal
Ottawa
Boston

ADAMS DIVISION

Washington
Carolina
Florida
Tampa Bay

4 division winners, 4 wild cards?
The NHL might like the optics of something like this. No team ever worse than 4th place. Oil could say they moved up from 7th to 4th... but they would never go for playing in anything but the Gretzky division.

IIRC, the old Jets hated playing in the Smythe even more than the Red Wings hated playing in the Western Conference. They were overjoyed to be moved to the Central when the Ducks came on board. I'm betting Winnipeg would rather stay where they are and play most of their games in their own time zone. Plus, they are building a rivalry with the Wild.
