I read a book about rape culture and the justice system in the USA, especially at universities called 'Missoula' by Jon Krakauer.

Reading this book and then hearing about this sentencing basically verifies everything that Krakauer wrote in the book.

It is worth a read for anyone interested in that subject.

How much you want to bet that the dude's dad either has his own company or "knows some people" and his son will be able to find a job just fine? He's a Stanford kid.

The petition to have the ruling judge removed from the Stanford rape case has reached over 635,000+ supporters.

There are a lot of pissed off people over this and rightfully so.

I'm starting to feel bad about my stance earlier in this thing about saying that the short sentence is fine but his life is wrecked.

Looking at the people who surround this dirtbag piece of garbage, makes me wonder if a long sentence would scrub some of the self entitlement off of him and his family and friends as another friend jumps stupidly into the fray pronouncing that it wasn't the rape that's the problem its societies deference to political correctness.

http://www.vox.com/2016/6/8/11883112...-stanford-rape

Also in the words of the rapist himself, his defense letter to the judge where its all about him

http://www.bustle.com/articles/16559...-own-self-pity

This is one of the reasons why I like the idea of mandatory minimums for sex/violence based crimes.

I get the anger, but I am not so sure about removal. Judges make tough decisions. If they make a mistake (as I believe was done here), the crown (or state) should appeal.

The words of his father, that he already has had 'a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action' is absolutely brutal.

Can we get that law amended then, please? Ugh. Gross.

That was very well written. I don't know if her statement was posted here but it was linked to in that article. It's also eloquent, and I was as moved by it as Biden was. I hope everyone reads it.

Can't he just go to another country and swim for them instead? I guess it kind of takes away his dream of competing for his home country, but it doesn't stop him from swimming at the Olympics.

The whole situation makes me sick and incredibly emotional. The fact that we have to be happy about his swimming ban in the States is just sad. I know people are saying that his life is over, but I don't see that. Once the Facebook posts and the heat dies down, I am sure he will be fine. It's not like guilt is going to torture him. He admits to no wrong doing. It was just booze and sexual promiscuity. And he'll have his dad in his ear, telling him how great he is and that he did nothing wrong.

Really makes me sick. Incredibly infuriating and sad to think of the effect this will have on victims of rape in the future. Even if your rapist is literally caught in the act, he will get 6 months, which will get cut down to three because he can swim fast.

At some point you have to wonder how many lies the judge ignored when he came to his sentence.

Even today evidence is rising that he wasn't some inexperienced college student who drank to much. Pictures of drug use and heavy drinking prior to him going to college are starting to emerge.

I don't know the US justice system, but I'm sure there is a way to appeal this gross sentence. This kid is clearly a liar, a predator and a sociopath, he's dangerous.

On another note, if I was the victims brother or father, I'd be waiting for the day that the kid is released, any sentence received for beating him within an inch of his life would be worth it.
