Take the deal Tavares got, add 0.5M per year for the inflation of the cap in that time (rough math)
4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5, 6.5
That's 6M AAV
Want to buy another year? Tack one on at 8M. Bumps the AAV to just shy of 6.3M
How about 2 more years? 8M each. Bumps it to a flat 6.5M AAV
Tavares' contract was very team friendly, but I also don't see Monahan commanding what Toews/Kopitar made applied to today's cap (they made mid-high 6M, equates to 8M)
Potential negotiation - Flames start at a Tavares like 5.5-6M, Monahan wants a more Toews/Kopitar 8M. The middle ground in there is 6.75-7M, which would be reasonable if buying more than 1 UFA year

I am probably asking too much but I would lovenfornthe Flames to have a new coach as well as Monahan and Gaudreau to have 8 year extensions in place prior to the draft or at worst July 1
id want under 6.5 if we go 8 years. If 6 years under 6 million. Barkov who i would say is a better player got 5.9*6 so it would have to be something equal or a bit less. Also seeing what mackinnon will get will have a big impact on what monahan can command. We should all hope mackinnon gets signed for around the same as barkov so flames have alot of leverage.

Explain please!
Barkov has potential but he takes off games due to broken nails, sunburns on his nose and bad haircuts.
You don't just look at goals and points when comparing players. Where Monahan falls short of some of these other forwards is two-way play. While he has the hockey IQ to be a responsible player without the puck, he doesn't have the wheels to ever be a fore-checking demon like Toews, and I haven't seen anything to suggest Kopitar-level shut-down play from him. Monahan has not looked very good on the PK, while Barkov is already a regular penalty-killer with the Panthers and one of the team's best two-way forwards. Barkov can also play the kind of heavy game we haven't seen from Monahan.
In Monahan, the Flames have a smart centre with decent size who has a great touch with the puck and doesn't need much of opening to put the puck in the net. Lacking speed and the temperament to play a heavy game, I don't think he'll ever be a great two-way centre. I hope Flames management don't get sucked into paying him like one.

Had a better year? What, PPG better? sounds like an Oiler fan describing Hall year after year.
Fact! Monahan has been better than Barkov every year since drafted.
Better 2 way player that scored at a better rate this year. I don't watch a ton of the Panthers but the amount of love Barkov gets over on HF is crazy.

I see the love too but everytime I watch him play I see "meh" ..bad timing I guess!. I still think Mackinnon will be the best out of that draft when all is said and done.
I think Monahan will continue to have the best numbers from that draft unless Gaudreau is removed from his line in the near future (in favor of Bennett). Monahan has proven to be a great goal scorer at only 21 and has the best line mate from anyone from that draft today

If it got done tomorrow, that could be it. If it gets done in a week, or if it takes a month, we still have the comfort level that it is going to get done.”
