Babysitter Advice
We are new parents with a four month old baby.
Right now one of us will stay home or have family watch him but we are new to the idea of having a babysitter over.
What is the going rate for a babysitter now?
Also, a woman from my office with a six year old girl has asked several times to watch him for me. Her daughter loves babies. She mentioned it a few times and we agreed on a date but I have no idea if I should pay her, order pizza for them, buy a gift or something else entirely? I think cash would be wrong but a GC for dinner or ordering dinner for them might work.
CP?

We pay 10 bucks an hour. It's getting pricy these days.

Wow. Undercutting Minimum wage on underpriviliged workers, thats cold and also a labour violation, I'm surprised none of your little slaves have reported you to the Labour Board yet. Do you also supply them WCB and an annual T4 or do you cheap out on that too?

They should also be provided benefits and vacation for every hour worked. If they want to start a union that's up to them as well. Anything else and it's a violation of human rights.

My daughter turns 12 this month, so we've started getting those services for free! The best child labour is free child labour.

You heathen! So now not only are you abusing their rights under Alberta labour law, you're basically pushing someone into slavery and by default removing the opportunity of that employment from someone who truly needs it to feed their family!
Heartless V. Really heartless. And here I thought you were one of the good ones.

$0. My wife's parents live a block away, and my parents aren't too far away either. Somebody is always available and willing to watch the kids. They're retired and have plenty of free time. Save hundreds monthly by having our parents watch the kids instead of sending them to day care too.

My friends kid just did the course last year and they told them to charge $6 bucks an hour. My wife made me pay her $20.00. We were just down the block in a backyard BBQ I feel I got ripped off she would have been totally content at $6.00

$20/hr or $20 for however long you were gone? How many kids do you have? Where they awake or already put to bed? All factors in how much to charge.

We pay $12-15/hour for babysitters - we haven't used too many, a couple who were in Grade 11/12, and one adult. Not sure how to approach your second question, that one is a bit more awkward. I think I'd plan on paying her, but be prepared for her to refuse? I think ordering in a pizza for supper would be a good idea.

$20 per hour for 2 hours so $40.00 Total. Technically 2 toddlers but one was our friends (babysitters little sister) and it was at the babysitters house. She did have to put both kids to bed.

I wouldn't let a 6 year old babysit your child.

I'm gonna say that is sending the wrong message and setting the expectation too high. As well you are now pretty much committed to paying her that from now on.

I'm assuming you mean the mom of the 6 year old wants to babysit, right? I had to read that a couple times.
We usually pay $10/hour and then a tip that more or less brings it up to $15/hour. I'd pay more if our kids didn't sleep, but as it stands currently the job entails watching Netflix and eating our food until we return.
Gift cards are nice, but cash is more flexible. Plus maybe she can give a bit to her daughter and make her feel like she helped out.

Family if possible, otherwise minimum of $40 for babysitter who lives next door.
Typically not away more than 3 hours - more $ if longer away.
It's just part of the cost of going out, like paying $12 for a whisky.

Wow, I feel cheap now paying around $7/hour and rounding up for teen-aged babysitters. I thought $6-$7 was the normal rate.

I think she gave half to her friend that was there as well. I know we shouldn't pay that but I can't control how much my wife gives to a kid when I'm not there. Luckily we don't use babysitters often since the grandparents live 2 doors away and like others mentioned free child care is the best child care
