For your enjoyment: A HTZ 97.7 radio station host in St. Catharines ON gets a scalper to drive from Mississauga to St. Catharines to sell 2 tickets for $2000. Cathartic hilarity ensues...
Everything I've ever bought from food to CDs was resold by some middle man for a profit, why do I care more that some leach made a profit on a concert ticket than the leach that made twenty cents extra on the pound of potatoes I bought yesterday?

I don't know if that is a great example. Those middlemen actually facilitate getting those items to you. The value they add is tangible. Scalpers are like superfluous middleman who serve no purpose at all.
It does seem like there are better ways to distribute tickets. credit card / id checks is probably the most enforceable, albeit prone to issues. There's of course adding additional shows or the possibility of adding additional shows that could turn off scalpers from buying up an initial run of tickets.

As I have no interest in screwing around trying to get tickets at 8am when they get released a scalper adds absolute value, he or she does the work for me, they enable me to not worry about when I need tickets, I can get them at anytime from release up to ten minutes before the show for a cost.

You didn't need to screw around at 8am. If tickets were still available you could purchase them right now. Or later. Or probably almost any moment until the show (I have no idea what time tickets would no longer be available).
That is not a "value added" service, that already exists.

Agreed. Nothing good to say about this whole situation. A complete joke.

Scalpers exist because tickets aren't available. The scalper risks his money betting on the concert selling out, its just a futures market like any other, no one is forced to buy tickets from anyone, if you are dim enough to think it's worth spending two grand on a ticket to see the Hip when there's probably better band playing in a bar down the road for a ten dollar cover more fool you.
I like the Hip but they are not worth more than twenty bucks, that Gord Downie has cancer is sad, he seems like a genuinely nice guy, but it doesn't make them a better band.

False - scalpers exist because tickets are a scarce resource. Scalpers don't create tickets to fill a void. They anticipate a void and try to take advantage of it. In this case to the detriment of people who right now want to be able to pay the price the band/promoter has deemed acceptable.
Scalpers are simply getting in the middle because they know there are people who are willing to pay more. It is pretty dim to argue there is any public benefit coming from scalping.

If anything they create a void by buying half the tickets and then fill that void they artificially created.

How is it that you feel the need to try to belittle people for wanting to go see the Hip? Obviously they are worth more than 20 bucks, but the band down the road that you think is better won't be around in 2 years because they really aren't that good. You just think they are because you think they are your little undiscovered secret....

As far as scalpers go, they are scum.
If imagine he was just trying to get people going in a thread dedicated to Canada's biggest band's lead singer getting terminal cancer.
I'm actually surprised it tool this long, figured someone would want to play that part a lot sooner.

No, i have just never understood why anyone would buy tickets off a scalper in the first place, I also never understand the hate they engender why everyone gets pissed at them for existing.
I find the concept of a real estate agent far more predatory, no one has to buy concert tickets, it's a luxury item, housing is a basic.

I've seen the Hip a couple of times, they're a decent bar band and if it wasn't for Downies illness you nor I nor anyone else would drop more than fourty or fifty to see them and they sure as hell wouldn't be playing Rogers Arena.
Scalpers are no different from any other retailer, they buy a product, jack the price as high as the market will bear then sell it on, they take a risk on it selling and unlike most retailers it's a time limited risk, they take a bath on some concerts, make money on others.

They aren't their for public benefit, they benefit the promoter, he or she gets a guaranteed market for a third to a half of the product, it amiliates the risk and enables the concerts to happen.

They've played major hockey arenas for decades. If you want to be a ****, go to some other forum.

I'm not trying to make a point about the Hip, I'm just trying to point out the obvious, if you don't like scalpers don't buy tickets from them, they're making a living just like everyone else.
Ironically I have never bought a scalped ticket in my life, but if people want tickets I don't see why everyone gets so butt hurt
