He had a couple of pretty good WHL seasons but at the end of the day simply didn't have a single outstanding asset. Hope he has a solid career in Europe.

Remember when he was one of if not our brightest hope for the future?
Looks like only Sam is going to make it in the big time
I don't really remember him ever being highly touted. Best case scenario was people hoping he'd turn out into a solid 3rd or 4th line centre, kind of like an Eric Nystrom.
I think it was clear early that he wasn't going to be a top line talent. Having said that however, I did think he was one of those can't miss guys because he had that average skill at everything.
Thought it was line 3 vs line 4 for the player. Never saw him exporting himself to Europe.

What I remember is that he was our highest draft pick in a year when Darryl traded away our first and second rounders. I don't think he ever elevated himself beyond third round pick potential.

What I remember about him is that he's the guy picked with the CBJ 3rd rounder they sent for Anton Stralman, because Brent preferred to keep Staffan Kronwall on the roster.
Solid decisions all around.

Aww Max. Besides Horak, he was the prospect I just couldn't give up on even as everything started falling apart.
He had a promising season with the Heat where everything he touched went into the back of the net and him and Granlund looked like they could have contended for the top line on the Flames, and then it all rapidly went downhill.
Hopefully Germany works out for him. I know Hanowski went over last year and did quite well.
If I was a tweener type player, I'd much rather play in an awesome place like Germany or Sweden vs some of the backwater places the AHL has franchises. Cough Stockton Cough Bakersfield cough cough.

Totally. Even as an underager. I think Matthews made a great choice going to Switzerland.
Play pro and make money when all your peers are making peanuts and living in Prince Albert or whatever. No brainer.
Yeah 63 points in 66 games in 13/14 for the Heat got my hopes up. For whatever reason he regressed but he should still get to have a fine hockey career making decent money in a nice place.
i remember him as one of the prospects with the first "fricken/freaking" thread titles. All we had in his draft + 1 year was he Howse, Backlund, Erixon and Brodie. He was a top 5 prospect in the org at one time. Since then others have become much better but for years this organization had a bad rep for not graduating prospects and I recall Max being a huge favorite for many on here.
