It is still not possible to buy individual games.
They just started offering mini packs.
Pack 2 contains all the North American games and also Canada vs USA.

Hoping for a Canada vs North America final and praying Treliving has Johnny and Monahan signed with new 7 year deals a month before the tournament begins.

$1600 for the nosebleeds? haha, no thanks. This isn't exactly Canada Cup '87.

I find the ad campaign they just started to be pretty funny. "Which country owns hockey" and then fans and players from each country claim it's their homeland. If there was one international tournament where that campaign doesn't work, it's this one.

I'm sure the whole reason for going that direction was because they know how silly and money driven the format is and that while it's a fun idea with lots of great players, there won't be much sentiment from fans towards any particular teams. It's more of a "I'll watch some great hockey" tournament.

I actually would have respected that style of ad campaign more, "We assembled a lot of talent, come watch some great all star style hockey with more intensity!".

The NHL comes across as an ever-increasingly greedy league these days. This whole tournament with its money/power grab, along with incidents like when they banned Tampa from having an outdoor viewing party, or even the push for hockey in Vegas, really demonstrates how little they value their core fans vs. their bank accounts.

I mean it was always about the money, but now it just seems obnoxiously greedy to me.

As for the poll? Meh, I just don't give a crap to be honest.

And personally, I'm glad there won't be 6 crap teams in the tournament and a bunch of exhibition-quality games at the outset. I have no doubt that the quality of play, from the opening whistle of the first game, will be better than the Olympics.
And this.

Who enjoys the opening rounds of the Olympics, with Canada vs. Germany and USA vs. Norway? No one. People are impatient through those games and get excited for the medal rounds where the true contenders face off. In the WC, we get that from game 1.

It's not a best on best.
The only thing that the U23 age restriction, and U23 team, does is ensure that there is more elite talent on the ice; i.e. it goes further in ensuring that all of the best players are on the ice, facing each other, with little or no lesser talent from countries that struggle to put together a full roster that can compete.

It's all killer, no filler.

The decision on whether they go to the Olympics and the holding of the WC have little to do with each other. IIRC, the Olympics are on the brink because of issues of location (and the fact that the games would be played at the worst times for the NHL's biggest markets), insurance, ownership of the game product for rebroadcast and promotion purposes, etc. Nothing to do with the fact that a WC will be held this summer.

It is actually reportedly true, you just have it backwards. The NHL reportedly decided they weren't going to continue going to the Olympics which was absolutely about money, and then the World Cup of Hockey was revived to replace the Olympic participation, only with the NHL now making all the money.

It's fine to say you're okay with how everything is happening, but you'd be fooling yourself to say the World Cup of Hockey isn't about the money and that it has little to do with Olympic participation.

This was a completely calculated, money driven decision. Full stop.
