I don't think that Pronger gets picked anyway, hopefully the league throws the Coyotes a bone and say he is exempt from the draft(highly unlikely the league does this though).

Not sure why the NHLPA would be pushing for this? I would think that the players who are under contract would prefer to stay on the teams that they signed with rather than an expansion team. Additionally this offers nothing of value to the players with expiring contracts.

I will be very pissed if this is actually what happens in the end. If so I feel happy knowing that Burke will be sure to get his two cents in.

I will echo many others, but Wideman will more than likley be bought out this summer if this all comes to pass.

For Calgary the biggest issue isn't that you have to protect Wideman per se and expose someone else, it's that it would make him virtually untradeable at the deadline.
Doesn't the team Wideman is traded to have the option of not honoring the NMC? I thought I read that hear one time.

No. The NMC moves with the player.

Screw that and screw the Coyotes. If one single team has to protect a player with a No Move Clause who is going to be UFA in just a few days, then all of them should have to.

Either you screw them all, or let them all off the hook.

I believe Arizona has a sweetheart deal if they buyout Pronger.

$191k in cash for the next two years. Full cap hit for this upcoming season so they can hit the floor.

Win scenario for them if they buy him out.

Here is the list of expiring NMC's

San Jose and Arizona get screwed pretty hard here, especially Arizona.

*According to CapFreindly*

Meh, Arizona will somehow get a "special commissioners exemption" and not have to protect those 2, being Gary's pet and all.

No problem, just buy him out, unless he's still hurt and you can't....

That wouldn't matter would it? It's a 35+ contract and won't go away no matter what until it expires.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't next season the last last year of his deal. Expansion won't be until 17/18. We should be clear of his contract anyway won't we?

I thought you couldn't buy out injured players?

I wouldn't want to lose Gio for free, but he would be the player to expose if Wideman is still with the Flames and needs to be protected

the silver lining would be potentially free of that big contract, which likely bites the Flames in years 5 and 6 (if not earlier), freeing $6.75 M cap space

The cap hit remains, but the contract is considered done by the NHL.

You can if the player agrees to it. See Chris Drury who waived the medical requirement https://www.nhl.com/news/rangers-to-...tract/c-567644

There is very little money left on the Pronger deal, he could be open to it.

The expansion draft is expected to take place in mid-to-late June. These contracts won't expire until July 1st, which is why there is such debate about teams having to use a protection slot on players who will be UFA's in a matter of days after being protected

The other side of the coin is not only does it suck having to waste a protection slot on him, but it also diminishes the value of an asset to virtually zero.

I'm not gonna claim to know what the value of Wideman coulda been/will be at next year's trade deadline, but I've been around long enough to know that anything can happen at the trade deadline. And now feel with this "stipulation" attached to a pending free agent, it will render the asset useless.

Still stupid though...

Well as long as it doesn't affect LA, I'm sure the NHL could give a #### about whoever the other 6 are.

They'll probably just have the expansion draft on July 1st and then free agency can begin on July 5th or something like that. Problems solved.

Buy out has to happen. Yet another Feaster blunder that we get to live with. Why on Earth was a Wideman calibre player given a NMC. Dumb dumb GM.

That's assuming Gio is still on the roster by that point.
